Well in the coming week I will pull the trigger on the rebel xt, body only. Here are the three lenses that I'm considering (all three):
- 50mm f/1.8 [best bang for the buck] - 28-105 USM [all-purpose walkaround lens?] - 70-300 IS USM I am a complete newbie so excuse my layman language. I see using the fifty for just general close ups with an interesting DOF. Second glass as the verstile lens to use mostly and to replace the kit lens. Third would be in anticipation of the F1 USGP and other various events, whether it be concerts, etc. Please provide C&C. Also, would either the fifty or the 28-105 suit me for taking shots of static cars? I'm imagining the fifty might be able to do it but w/ too much(too little?) DOF, and the 28-105 to be a little too plain? Thanks in advance. |

I just bought the XT, 50 1.8, EF 28-135 IS USM, and the cheap kit lens 18-55 for some wider angles. I'm very pleased with my choices. Next will be the longer zoom. I'm focusing on EF lenses primarily because I hope that in a few years a reasonably priced full frame body will be available. But even if that doesn't happen I'm content with the package I bought.

You might want to include the kit lens in there for whenever you need somewhat wider angle shots.

Definitely the 50mm f/1.8. I like the 28-105.. I think it's a highly underrated lens..
You might also want to browse the EOS Lens forum on this board.. You might learn about a lens you never thought about through one of the discussions there.. Or you might pick up some good ideas for accessories.. It's another great resource on resource on the Canon Digital Photography Forums. |

For the car races, I think the 70-300IS would be good.
I'm not keen on the 28-105 on a cropped sensor for walking around, as it's not wide enough. The new 17-50mm range zooms are to mimic the same range as the 28-105 on cropped sensor, so I'd prefer those more. I'd recommend the Tamron 17-50 f2.8 instead of the 28-105mm and the 50mm as f2.8 is generally fast enough for general walking around. If you plan on doing lots of low light portraits or really shallow DOF, then I'd get the 50mm prime. |

First, I don't think you'll find 28mm nearly wide enough on a 1.6 crop camera. For your all-purpose lens, consider something that gives you 17 or 18 on the wide end. Second, I would not recommend buying the 70-300 IS until this is resolved: http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/co...&modelid=11922

Make sure the 70-300IS is what you really want for a telephoto lens.
The image stabilization can be a great thing to some but a waste of money for others. Specifically i can't see it being much use at the USGP because you'll need high shutter speeds mostly anyway which make the IS feature pointless. If you have doubts about needing or wanting IS then consider instead the canon 100-300USM.It's image quality is nearly as good as that of the 70-300IS and the focus speed a little faster By the way-are you sure there will be any cars actually racing this year? The best joke i heard from last year was that they should make all the michelin runners go slow around the banking and that max moansly would stand on the track to enforce it |
