It is a hassle at a wedding to run back and forth to my bags to switch lenses specially if it has to go fast. I was wondering if they have something like a toolbelt but for lenses. Something you strap around your waist and it holds several lenses.
I did a search but couldnt find anything so I wonder... does something like this excist? Heck if not, maybe I am the next american inventor..lol

I don't do weddings, but sometimes I find myself doing events and thus face a similar situation. And I hate carrying the bag around at events because it's all about footwork - positioning to get the shots I want.
You can put such cases on your belt but it is not the most comfortable solution. I put the cases on the Lowepro Light Belt which is padded and feels much better than my normal belt. I dress normally, then wear the Lowepro belt over whatever I'm wearing that day. I usually take two cases maximum, covers everything I need. |

One of our moderators, Skip Souza, swears by his Tamrac belt set. Might want to check it out.

That's why I like my Velocity 9. It is a sling bag, but when I am at an event and I can put my camera strap around my neck, I can actually negotiate 3 lenses from my bag. It's very handy and I keep the bag in front of me if I need to change lenses often. Which lenses are you switching? I have 3 camera bodies and I use all of them at weddings. Maybe you should invest in another camera body so you don't have to switch lenses so much. Also, that's why it's nice to have 2nd shooters.

I use two bodies and usually have my 50mm on one and the 85 on another. But sometimes I want to switch my zoom lens really quick or my fish eye and then I need them handy. Plus I am about to buy a couple more lenses that will work well for low light conditions and then I will want to switch even more often

You need all those all at once? Wow. I have been keeping my 24-70L on my 20D and 17-40 on my EOS 3 and 50 1.4 on my 10D. When I need something else, I switch out the 20D, whatever is one it comes off. The 85 is usually reserved for portraits or if I need something longer than the 70mm. I would completely lose track if I switched so often.

I've only done 2 weddings so far but I just used the 24-70 + flash when necessary on one body and the 50mm on the other. Switched to the 70-200 once but that was it. Heck with trying to cover everything all the time...you're only one person so just get what you can get with what you have on 2 bodies.

Camping stores also have interesting "utility" belts with a variety of hooks, loops and holders. A few of their pouches are actually almost identical to some camera equipment gear I've seen, and some items are cheaper. Basically you're trying to create your version of the "Bat" utility belt.
Thinktankphoto.com which makes a line of top notch rolling camera cases also has a section on their website where they have such items. Go to: http://www.thinktankphoto.com/ttp_products.html Personally, I have a couple of different sized bags when I do a wedding, plus the pockets in my suit jacket. They aren't terribly big, but if I need to carry extra lenses around a church sanctuary or at the park, I have a midsized Tamrac case I use. I find it easier to pop things in and out of it. It's less bulky for me than a utility belt that would be under my suit. Hope this helps Song Last edited by sapearl : 4th of June 2006 (Sun) at 11:08. |

I swear by a sherpa. Just bring a friend or whatever and tell them what you want and they bring you whatever. That's my husband's job. Batteries, water, new lens, someone to guide my crap (purse, equipment) whatever I need. They can also round up people for portraits and put stuff away you don't need to carry. Assistants don't need to be second photographers to be incredibly useful.

Try for a tall guy. That way they can reach stuff you can't, haul stuff you can't, and take pictures where you can't (i.e. religious wedding sometimes don't allow women to take pictures of the men, etc.)

I use two bodies as well. I have my 20D with the 28-135 IS, and then my 10D with the 20-40 (indoors), or 70-200 (outside images). I carry a set of AA's for my flash in one pocket, and camera batt. in the other. I typically wont have to access my bags til it is convienent to do so (after the ceremony, or during dinner at the reception). If you dont have two camera bodies Id probably choose a fanny pack style camera bag.
