Question Advice on a New Camera

Hi All,

I am getting married in 3 weeks and we are of to New York on our honeymoon. Now i dont want to be carrying the 20D around all day so i have decided to buy a compact.

I am currently looking at the IXUS 800IS, does anyone have experiance with this or does anyone have any pictures they have taken with it? I am realy interested in it due to the size, but i would rather see some real shots (ie not the samples on the canon site) taken with it before i buy.

My next question is to the members from over the water. The camera will cost me about £300 in the UK, is it cheaper in NYC & if so where do i buy it. I was in NYC about 2 years ago for a few days and almost every electrnics shop i looked in seemed to be quite expensive.

thasnk,

Steve

I am completely unfamiliar with the ixus model numbers, so I cannot help you there. But if you are going to buy in the USA, you need to check out the US canon site to learn which model you want. Or which one is comparable to the ixus you want.

As far as NYC camera shops, B&H photo is mecca for camera shops in the whole country it seems. Everybody on this forum talks about it and the prices are good. I live less than 4 hours from it and I have never been . They have a website so look it up. Remember, they are not open on Saturday's because of the Jewish Sabbath. And I think they close early on Fridays. But just check the site. I hear the store is huge and they have pretty much everything you could want on display for you to play with.

as far as i can tell in the US the model is the PowerShot SD700 IS.

I wish manufacturers would use the same names around the globe.. it would make things easier

The common advice around here for you DSLR folks that want a compact is to look at something like the A620 or A700(US Model #). It gives great performance for a compact and has plenty of manual controls to satisfy the DSLR in you.

The A700 is the new version of the A620, but does not have a swivel lcd and a few other minor changes. You can pick up an A620 pretty cheap these days. I got mine for $265 US.

B&H as a honeymoon spot: what a great idea!

One downside to purchasing a camera in NYC would be the local sales tax. Prices at B&H are good, but the extra 8+ percent takes a bite. And it's not a VAT that can be refunded, according to their Web site. Speaking of which, here's a link to the page regarding their store's info. I wonder if it's possible to purchase online, avoid the tax, but pick it up in the store... Hmmm. (Seems too obvious.)

Enjoy your trip!

I would be interested to know if that can be done. Because one of these days I am going to go there but I am not going to buy anything there because of the tax. Shipping would be much cheaper than tax. But to save on tax AND shipping...
