I use continuous as numbering method. What I noticed with the 5D is that if I delete pictures during a shoot, the next picture taken will take the number of the one I delated.
The result is that the pictures are not anymore in chronologic order. Did I miss something? Thank you in advance for your suggestions. |

Are you sure you are looking at the image number and not the sequence number. I just tested my 5D and when I look at the info screen I see an image number of 100-0418 with a sequence number of 1/1. When I delete that image, and shoot again, the new image has an image number of 100-0419 with a sequence number of 1/1.
When I shot multiple images, the image number always increments but the sequence number does close down. i.e. 100-0420, 100-0421, 100-422 in sequence 1/3 2/3 3/3. If I delete 100-0421 sequence 2/3 the others close up with the same image number but the sequence then goes to 1/2 2/2 etc. Otherwise, I don't understand what you are referring to. Tony... I haven't noticed it either, and wouldn't expect it. Of course I don't have time to delete during a shoot. If there's a lull I'll grab a drink or something; maybe tidy the camera bag. But everything gets saved at least once, even the blurry, out-of-focus, overexposed, wrong WB shots of the ground from when I bumped the shutter. Won't make it into the working files, but I don't delete it.

Thank you for your feedback, much appreciated.
But now you make me doubt ! So I just checked a recent shoot still on the card. When i review the pictures on the LCD, the order and # are correct even though I know I deleted some during the shoot. The problem occurs when I download the card to the computer using a Dazzle card reader. Then the chronology is messed up.The date and hour by the way are still correct. I used the 10D and 20D before and never had this problem. |

I've never noticed this on 5D but like Jon I never delete images during a shoot. I don't use the lcd to review the image per se but to examine the histogram. I cull out the losers after I have downloaded and renamed and renumbered the files.

I never delete an image. Sometimes things that werent supposed to be in focus give neat bokeh effects. Sometimes the wrong white balance gives a different time of day effect. Sometimes you decide later there was a use for it. Memory is cheap, dont risk deleting.

Since I have the 5D I did not install any software from the package and use what I had from the 20D already installed on my computer. Would it be the reason of the change? |

I treat the card reader as a drive letter and create my own directory on my hard drive and then drag and drop them from the card to the new directory. I use a double paned file manager (www.ghisler.com) called Total Commander and this makes it really easy.
I then use this or breezebrowser to rename the files based on event and my file numbering methodology. I've never been a fan of the Canon software for copying but whatever works for you is fine.

I used to just transfer my images by hand to created folders. When I got my D5 I loaded the software. Now when I put a card in the reader. It downloads the photos automatically to a folder I specified in the preferences and then it seperates them into folders by date.
The program is camera window. Although the only thing I use it for is downloading images off of cards. Once it is done. I open Adobe CS2 Bridge and work from there. |

Thanks for your suggestions. I will look at the CD and see what I need. Maybe i am missing something specific to the 5D. The way I was doing it with the 10D and 20D was simple, quick and easy. I hope to be able to keep it simple as it was :=)

I got to thinking about your issue. I attempted what you did and came up with your same results with files from my 5D. I usually use PhotoMechanic to do my ingest from a card reader and rename and add IPTC data at that time so I've never run in to this before. I'll dig my 10D out later today or tonight and test with that to see what happens, but you are correct. The files that were deleted seem to be replaced with shots after the delete. Probably something with the FAT tables and reusing a directory entry or something like that. I would suggest either using PM or another browser to ingest as these will make your life a LOT easier. I've just run the same test with my 10D. I get the same results. The wizard is definately doing something funny. Again, my recommendation is to use a separate application for ingesting to the PC. Hope this helps. Tony... BTW, This was with a different CF card also. |

Thank you tfiorda/Tony for running these tests! I will look at PhotoMechanic. What is surprising is that my "method" worked and still works well with my 10D and my 20D. Just frustrating that it doesn't work also with the 5D.
