Default 70-200 f/4 successor?

Hi all

Just curious if anyone thinks Canon will release an IS version of the popular lens above?

The lens is probably selling quite well right now, so they don't need to really, but with competitors releasing their own version of IS in the camera rather than the lens, I think Canon need to upgrade their entire lens range to IS soon.

That or release an IS body (which might upset a few people who have recently purchased expensive IS lenses!)
Any thoughts? Photokina is just around the corner!

The 70-200 f/2.8 IS exists. Producing an f/4 70-200 IS would take away some of the market for the 2.8 IS IMO.

People will pay the extra for the 2.8 IS, Canon probably has already considered the matter closed. I think Canon is working on new lenses with ISO under 4.0, but the success of the 70-200 IS and for those who don't need the larger ISO, the 4.0 is a wonderful lens, not so expensive.

The difference in price between the 2.8 IS and 4 is quite large though (like 125%)

(P.S. Suzie, I think you meant aperture, not ISO?)

I'm not that fussed about 2.8 to be honest, I don't think I'd ever go that large/fast.
f4 is fine for me, and I would have Canon's babies (painful I know) if they made an IS version of the f4.

And I think Canon will eventually have to bite the bullet in regards to eating into the 2.8 market. As I mentioned, if other companies are offering something better than Canon, well what choice will they have?

IMO, Canon should definitely do it... but knowing them, because of their brand and market share, they'll do it later rather than sooner because they don't have to.

You're right. Fixed. Thanks.

I am so surprised that no one here works for Canon R&D. Can't we send a spy in there that speaks Japanese and get a scoop? I agree, Canon takes their time, only coming to terms with market competition when Nikon or others come up with something big. Even then, I was surprised the price of the 5D didn't take a nose dive when Nikon came out with the D200. Well, Canon did respond with a less expensive introduction of the 30D, but lenses are totally different. People are still paying top dollar for used ones. So, development of something like a f4 IS may never come.

You may prefer IS for the handholding task, but there's already a 2.8 in the ~$1000 range and it would take a veritable groundswell of demand for Canon to squeeze two lenses into that slot between the f/4 and the f/2.8 IS. Shoot, an F/4 IS would be bigger, heavier, and costlier than the f/2.8, and less flexible to boot (IS is useless on moving targets.). IS is an expensive crutch, big apertures are the real deal. a lens with both is worth its weight in gold.
