my dealer called me and giving me a 12 months zero interest plan via personal checks issuance on a brand new 1Ds Mark II in the amount of $ 7,500.00. Here in the philippines it is worth Pesos 400,000.00.
Should i get this, (with a very enticing payment scheme) or wait for the announcement at photokina? please advise

Why wait? There's always going to be something new and improved on the horizon. Get what you need (or want) now and start shooting.

If my dealer knew who I was and knew that I had money and offered me something like that then, I couldn't care about what comes in a few months time. I buy it and then worry about repaying it

Given it's a 1DS I would wait. I agree with Liz that by not buying now you'll be playing a waiting game, however, the current 1DS technology has been around for a while now and I think it's due for some major improvements in its next version not just basic tweaks.

I somehow don't think that canon will make big improvements in the next 1Ds series camera. Granted the camera was released 2 years ago, but the big difference between the 20D and 30D are signs that they aren't going to make a big change.
The thing to keep in mind is glass. Because the CMOS sensor is out doing the resolution in the glass. This means that if you have cheap glass you will see in the photos. This even happened with the first 1Ds canon did. But the real question is do you need such a camera? or do you need full frame? and if the answer is no then you have found your answer. It may be a good deal but no point in spending money on stuff you don't need. And I can see from your sig you already got some nice bodys already.

The new camera will probably follow the others in the minor tweak categories. I predict a 1DSMIIN with the same 16.7 mp sensor, it will offer picture styles and a 2.5" LCD. Maybe a little faster. But overall, nothing major to upgrade. Who is giving Canon a run for their money in this market..............so why should Canon make major upgrades, they are already so far in front of N*(#)$

It's such a tough call. Waiting could be advantageous, but on the other hand if you wait for the perfect scenario, you could be waiting a long time, rather than taking pictures...

Just do it, i hear it is a great camera as it is. An upgraded model at photokina wont make this camera any less of a camera than it is right now.

If you can afford it get it, like Doom said it isn't going to suddenly get worse if a new model is released. It is still incredible.

I'm sorry to say that I know very little about pricing in other parts of the world, but that is a bit high if it were purchased here.
B&H is currently selling it for $6,899. I understand that you probably can't get it for that price, but you might want to try to bargain with them. I think at this point in the camera's life, stores such as yours may be afraid of getting "stuck" with it. Try it, you've got nothing to lose but perhaps a few hundred to gain. Personally, I'm in the market for a second body and am waiting to see what comes out. I also believe there won't be major changes, though, in an upgrade. Whatever you decide, you can't go wrong. It IS one amazing machine as it stands now. If I could only use it to half its potential. mark |
