Default How to get the best from a 5D - tips & tricks?

Hi everyone

My 5D arrived this morning but I haven't had much of a chance to use it yet (except for a quick check and firing off 60 or so frames checking settings).

What I'd like to know is if anyone has any tips or tricks when using the 5D that I don't have to find out the long way (ok I'm impatient )

I was shooting with evaulative metering this morning without over/under exposing and I noticed some highlights were totally blown out, so it appears to be like the 20D in that respect and I may be underexposing quite a lot...

Does anyone have any tips, comments or suggestions?

(especially concerning wedding and portrait photography - I have a couple of weddings coming up soon, as a guest not a pro!)

Thanks!

hmmmm.....not sure why no one is replying.

I found a lot of useful info in the handbook that comes with the camera.

Also, this is a good site to check out.

http://www.photoworkshop.com/canon/index.html

There are a couple of digital camera sites that address the 5D as well.

I've had my 5D for a week and really have lost interest in my XT...at least for now.

The 5D is one wonderful camera.

Good luck.

Get good glass.

EDIT: Okay, so you have good glass. Just try different metering modes, adjust the EC and double check your WB until you find that sweet spot, or shoot RAW. Of course you knew all that.

My best tip is to point the big round part at what you want to take a picture of, then look through the little window in the back and press that button on the right side. It works every time! hehehe

Experiment and shoot. Try out all the picture styles. Keep playing around until you feel comfortable with it. There are a lot of features and every person has a different perception of what they want out of the camera - by just shooting and playing around with it, you will find your own comfort levels.

Enjoy it, it is a magnificent 'beast'.

I haven't found the AWB to work as well on the 5D as I at least thought it did on the 300D. I don't know if that's a matter of me just getting more discriminating or if it's factual. I have definitely found that setting the white balance manually works best. As soon as I get a chance, I'm going to create a color profile for Adobe RAW using this procedure http://people.csail.mit.edu/ericchan/dp/acr/.

Thanks for all the hints, tips and especially the links!
I'll have a good browse of those.

I haven't looked at the picture styles yet, I always shoot RAW so wouldn't really make much use of them.

What do you guys think would be the best to shoot with...sRGB or Adobe RGB?
I've use Adobe so far as I am importing the images into Photoshop CS2 so it makes sense to me that they don't need converting again...what do you all think?

I have also started a 5D thread here with questions. I just got mine 2 days ago and I have been shooting a ton and just practicing. Here is one of my favorites...taken tonight after a squirt gun fight in the front yard!

DO NOT neglect spending a lot of time using the ISO 1600 setting. I find that the lack of motion blure more than offsets the small amount of noise produced. The noise can always be fixed with either Neat Image or Noise.

Maureen, was that with your 85 1.2? I can't get the information on the images on my computer.
