Fancy a macro lens and was gunning for the Canon until someone offered the Sigma for £130
Any thoughts on these lenses? The sigma gets a good score of FM |

The sigma should have very similar IQ but the auto focus won't compare. I'd say if AF isn't a huge concern for your macro work, get the sigma and put the money you save toward a set of Kenko extension tubes.

Well... with the two sigmas in my sig, I have decided that unless it's HSM, Sigma's AF is useless. It is slow, loud and unconfident. I may be spoiled by the USM in my L lenses though. I still suggest the Sigma as I feel their glass is great, sharp and perhaps even under-rated. I'd say you couls use it as a portrait as well and be very happy with the results.

Looks like the Canon is getting the nod here. I love mine, very sharp and a great price too

Definitely Canon - excellent lens ! The IQ may be comparable or even identical to the Sigma's, but the overall package is much better - USM, future compatibility etc.

Between the two, Canon. However, if you're looking of save a little, try the Tamron 90mm macro...it's even sharper than the Canon.

The Tamron is almost the same price (I'm talking B&H and Adorama prices), has slower AF and is 10mm shorter. I also doubt if one will be able to see the differences betwen the results produced with both lenses - the real world results, that is, not resolution charts.

I've got the Sigma 105mm Macro and the Kenko tubes and find that most of the time I rarely use the tubes but when I do, look out...

Hullo everybody!
Not sure whether his is the right place for it but can those of you who have used both, the Canon 100mm macro and the 150mm Sigma macro tell me which is a better buy? (In terms of picture quality and accurate foussing?) Mainly to shoot butterflies/flowers and the odd occasional portrait. Thank you all in advance. |

Oh and 150mm is going to be a little too long for any indoor portraits. I personally think 100mm, although it works, is still a little long. |

I have the canon and it's terriffic, amazingly (knock your socks off!!!) sharp and fast autofocus.
If your doing macro, you will hardly ever use AF - I never use it - but for portrait or the odd nature work the canon is very good too. |
