Default image stabilization - when and not?

New camera - novice. My S2 came with IS turned on (hand showing). Read how to set various modes but not when (manual shows how but not logic on when). I am going to take mainly scenery next few months. Long lens should have IS on, I assume, but what about mid range normal daylight shots? Should I turn off and on? should I go to panning or shoot only? Should I just leave continuous on? I guess for stitch should have continuous or panning on?
(last camera was point - shoot - get what you get)

on my s2 i keep the IS on always (one shot). BUT when you mount it on a tripod, turn the IS off cuz it could interfere and actually cause canera shake.

panning IS is for just that, 'panning' shots.

I agree with smucker...anytime when handheld. Depends on conditions also..if you're really picky, you can shut it off when using short shutter times.

Check out this and this informative review for some info and useful tips on settings such as IS. They're a great supplement to the user manual.

I can think of very few circumstances where IS hurts you, and many circumstances where you'll be very glad to have IS. I'd recommend leaving it on unless you have a very good reason to turn it off. Even then, I'd suggest you try one shot with IS and another without.

I always leave my IS set to "shoot only". This is because you may find you have a harder time fucusing the S2 with it set on "continuous", especially when shooting macro or using your zoom. Use the "panning" setting when you want vertical IS. Example shooting a moving car. Either way I never turn mine off.

SmuckerS2 -Would you pleaase explain why using IS if camera on tripod can cause shake. I read the same thing recently in a photo magazine but don't understand the reason why

The IS mechanism is trying oto stabilize something that's stable, so it ends up inducing its own vibration in the system. Sort of like feedback when a microphone gets in front of the speaker.

Turn it off when you're trying to shoot action. It's pretty useless for that unless you're panning.
