So I was at the Pacific Science Center today and I saw a bunch of people with their DSLRs there taking pictures of their youngins. I saw a handful of people with Olympus DSLRs and a few Nikons and a few Canons here and there. I saw a few grand parents taking pictures of their grand kids with their 5Ds and coupled to their 5Ds were some L lenses.
I've noticed that everytime i see people with L lenses, I get the urge to go out and add to my gear list, particularly with some L lenses. This is such a fun hobby, but it's such an evil hobby because it gets the best of me, and my wallet. Does anybody else have red-line envy everytime they see someone with an L lens? |

Eh, not really to be truthful. Composition is 95% of the art.

I love the L's that I have, but the 85 f/1.8 holds its own very well. Buy for what you need, not what you perceive.

I love the one L I have (the old, but still amazing 80-200 f/2.8L), but my Tokina 12-24 spends far more time on my lens. The little Tokie is my favorite lens, and it's cheaper than the cheapest L!
The next L I likely will purchase is the 300 f/4L IS, but that's a ways down the road. Before that will be either the yet to be released Tokina 16-50 f/2.8 or the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8, then probably the 85 f/1.8. I may also replace my 50 f/1.8 with the 50 f/1.4, and potentially the 28 f/1.8 (or the newly rumored 35 f/1.8 ). Only other L that's really on my radar right now is the 135 f/2L. Of course, if I come into some serious cash, I'll probably move to the 5D, which would prompt purchase of 17-40L and either the 24-70L or 24-105L.

I swear, for us hobbyists.. L stands for LUST.. really.. that's all it is... unless you have a business justification and it will thereby pay for itself. |

A little, but in the end, generally, if you have more than capable equipment, you don't worry too much. I'd like a 300 2.8 IS, but my Sigma 120-300 covers my long end in those cases.

To be frank, I lust after a bunch of non-Ls (eg. Sigma 10-20mm DC, occasionally the Canon EF-S 17-85mm), and envy people if they get prize-winning photos without using a costly piece of glass.
Naturally though, creativity can't be bought, but lenses can.

I wonder how long until I purchase my first L lens. The next lens I am looking at is the Sigma 100-300mm f/4, I guess I am a value guy. If I can get the right lens at less than L price, I will get it. My first L will probably be a wide prime.
