Default Wishing 5D had 5fps..

Well, there are the days where I wish the 5D had 5fps. A 'high speed crop' mode would actually be nice, give me a 1.3X crop to 8MP, and electronic framelines or masking in the viewfinder so I can compose properly. I am quite aware that one certain Canon competitor has this already I just want it for my 5D. No engineering reason why it can't be done, the 5D's mirror can be driven harder and faster, and their DIGIC 2 datapump has already been proven to handle 8MP 5fps. The bottleneck, as I suspect, is when you ask it to handle 12MP 5fps, it can't, so we got 12MP/3fps instead.

Full frame is wonderful for wide angle and everything that I do, I like it a whole lot, just that some days I find myself pressing the 5D into service as an action photography camera and the extra frames would be nice. My 350D simply cannot cut it when I need real AI Servo (this has always been a limitation) and precision focus with f/2.8 lenses.

The 5D's six invisible AF points are very useful things, too. I keep that custom function turned on. It allows me to keep my subject anywhere within the spot metering reticle and the points keep tracking. Wish the 30D had that. Ah, for a best-of-both-worlds hybrid..

They will pprobably bring out a higher fps in future incarnations of the 5D but it is not meant to compete with the Nikon - that's a pro level camera for photojournalists, and IMO that particular camera competes poorly with both the 1d mark IIN and the 1DS mark II, except in the matter of price.
If the 5D had everything, it would be a 1 series body with a price tag to match.

I understand your frustration. Last November I looked at both the 5D and the 1DMkIIN as my photographic needs were growing more demanding. The 1D won me over hands down. Full frame isn't a big deal to me, though I'll eventually pickup a 1DsMkII or it's replacement, but the body build and other capabilities did indeed induce to choose the 1D.

What about the 1Ds Mark II 16.7mp @ 8fps... shouldn't that prove its possible?

8fps at 8mp, right? 4fps at 16.7.

Well, if the 1Ds II did 8 fps . . .
The 1V with HS battery pack, however, does prove the shutter can cycle that fast. 10fps IIRC.

The next 5D will for sure have 5fps. I think that alone would improve its popularity, for Canon. Heck, even if that's the only improvement, its profit margins would be high.

That's the main reason I would purchase a ID MkII over the 5D. Full frame really isn't that big a deal considering what I shoot primarily, but speed certainly is.

yup, I had one for a year or so, it was great, except for going through a roll of chromes in 4 seconds.

the body was much smaller and lighter than the 1d series also.

if the 5d went faster, or the 1ds for that matter, the 1dII would be basically obsolete, and right now its still a major brand strength, considering the d2hs is only 4mp

For who? For PJ's and sports/action shooters, the 1DMKII(as you know) offers advantages to them.

enough to outweigh the increase in resolution in a similar body (1ds) or in a cheeper package (5d)? I thik it would need to have some major updates to compete, not that Canon will do that, and for that I'm glad (hoping I won't get killed in resale value, a third time)

Build quality is a big deal, though, as the equipment takes a lot of abuse. And for sports and action shooting, the shutter life is a huge deal (250K vs. 100K).

I gave a lot of thought to the 1D Mark II as it wasn't all that more expensive than the 5D, and especially with the much tougher body. But the killer for me was the 1.3 crop and no super wide angle to go along with it. I had that focal length with my 10-22 (since sold) on my 20D and now I have it with the 16-35 and my 5D.

Besides that I worked for a decade as a news shooter with FE-2's and F3's and they had no more than 3 frames per second. In theory with the Nikon ni-cad pack the F3 was 5fps+, but all I ever had were alkilines. Anyway I suspect that if 3fps isn't good enough 5fps won't be a lot better.

Yeah, my priority is full frame first (ultrawide for landscapes, interiors, and other things I shoot), sports second. There were good reasons for a 5D. if sports was my priority, I would definitely get the 1DM2N, especially with its awesome 45-point area-AF system and 8.5fps.

Having 5fps on the 5D or its successor would be totally sweet though, it would make it the ultimate general purpose camera. Lots of folks shoot action with the 30D, though.

Oh 1Ds, i thought you meant 1D. Okay, then, yeah you'd lose sales there, but then if the new 1Ds comes out, it should be even more competitive with medium format, if that's their aim.
