Can this lens do close up shots? Like at 17mm, can I go pretty close to say... a flower and it would still focus?

it can actually. I don't remember what the actual distance is but it is as good as my Canon 28-135 which is rad for close-ups.

it gets pretty close, here is a pic of my cat. the lens was sitting on the cat's bowl.
