Default Airshow advice

Hi there,
I'm going to another airshow this weekend and need some advice on how to get the correct exposure. I've taken some shots at shows over the summer and most of them have be under-exposed as can be see here - http://www.dalesplanes.co.uk/gallery...s.php?album=21. I never had problems before when I used my trusty old T90 with it's spot metering, but now I'm using a 350D with 70-300mm lense.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks

Michael

if you used that ground shot of the 2 hele's and set the camera to manul with thoes settings i.e apeture shutter speed you would be very close to the right exsposure but for inflight aim more for a faster shutter speed .
so next time take a shot like that and set that reading on manul as long as the light is the same it will be fine - take a shot and check then if you need to ajust exsposure.

I agree with that.

Yes for jets, but not with prop aircraft.

Posted by adamsti: General rule of thumb for props, 1/250 and slower for flying aircraft. 1/200 and 1/160 give very nice blur. For aircraft taxing 1/125 and slower. 1/60 is very good here. Obviously here you need a steady hand, but it can be done with practice.

Do a search for "Threads started by" Marauder61 for some inspiration. Or look at his gallery which has the exif data:

This is what I do,I shoot TV all the time, partial or spot metering, jets 1/800 fast props 1/200 down to 1/125 for the slower or taxi shots, helicopters 1/80.I always add 2/3 to 1 full stop of exposure comp.

Looks like you have a nice line up for the Portrush show hope the weather hold out for you !

If you have enough memory its good to shoot raw so you have more control over exposure issues.
I use Tv mode and evaluative metering and dial in + 1 stop exposure compensation as standard and adjust as needed while chimping ( chimping is good , ignore the jokes)
enjoy the w/end ! I dont think you get many airshows over there

Edit to cut out what wansnt require to answer the question.

Well here's what happens when you get it wrong: Speed was 125 and I had over exposed by a stop - But I still like it

I think this one is spot on, even if it is flying away from me

Apart from the brightness I like it too , looks like you shot it pretty much into the sun ? since the colours are low anyway have you though about darkening it and doing & B&W ?

second one looks nice , & exhaust haze too !
