Default Table Top Tripod Choices

So I've looked around at various stores and browsed the threads here and am still trying to figure out the best table top tripod. I'm looking for something that is very compact for transport, but is as flexible as possible. This will primarily be used with a Rebel XT + 17-85 EF-S lens.

The choices (unless I'm missing something):

(1) The Bogen Table Top Digi 709.

The advantages: Very well built. Nice ball head. Stable.
The disadvantages: Sits very low on the table so you can't tilt the camera downward - not good for macro stuff.

(2) The ProMaster T1.

Advantages: Nice design. Flexible with a lot of uses - one thread on it mentions using it to stabilize a shot against the corner of a wall.

Disadvantages: May be a bit unstable.

(3) The Slik Mini Tripod.

Advantages: The suction cup means you can stick it to things.

Disdavantages: Kinda bulky looking (haven't seen it in person though). I'm not a big fan of the Slik leg extension tighteners. And not sure if the leg extension would be much use in the 'table top' use.

So....any thoughts?

Yes...none of these....the novoflex microstativ....cheap, solid, fantastic build quality, I love mine...will even hold a 30D, grip and 300f4 (using the lens collar)

Checked the first 2 - no mention of load rating.
But it is stated for the bogen:
"The Digi-Table-Top tripod was developed to maximize the superior imaging capabilities and versatility of new-generation, compact digital cameras. "
Notice it does not say "DSLR" with heavy lense (and or flash , grip)
Light duty Tripods tend to fail with SLRs on them. It will only be a small drop , but a drop nonetheless.

I use a Bogen 3007. I little pricey, but very well made. It breaks down for carry in a small pouch. I added an extra extension to add to its versatility. Highly recommended.

I used this one in the store and the ball locks very firmly. I'm pretty sure it won't fail - at least not with a Rebel XT and the 'compact' 17-85 lens.

Anyway, I ran down to the local camera shop and picked up the ProMaster T1 Max.

The package is pretty poorly designed. I didn't even realize that it was a tripod until I looked closely. You'd think they could add a little picture.

Here's a size comparison. Note the other downside: it doesn't fold into a straight shape. It has the angled section. But it does come with a little booty case.

And firmly holding the XT and lens. Note the longer 'front' leg that stablizes the lens. Seems to work pretty well.

I'm going to use it for a while and see if it works for my needs. If not, I've got 15 days to return it.

Then maybe I'll try the Novaflex or Bogen 3007 mentioned above.

Btw, the Bogen 3007 kit is available from Amazon here.

And the picture from Bogen's site (direct link to the information page doesn't work - damn javascript):

It certainly is sturdy. No flex in the legs at all.

Here is a review of several table tops. Based on these reviews I just bought the Giottos QU100 (should be here tomorrow). No review of Pro Master but maybe can give you some ideas in case you return yours.

Holy Schmokes!

That's a lot of options - even if a number of them are only for compact point and shot cameras.

Thanks for the link - great resource for folks.

Don't forget to look at the reallyrightstuff.com ground pod TP-243. It's a heavier sturdy model that can support around 50lbs. Some drawbacks but overall high quality.

I'm surprised no Bogen/Manfrotto products were included. Maybe it was a price point issue

I 'm looking at this as a travel/compact tripod too. Do you still have this or found something better?

Don't forget about the Benro Travel Angel tripods. They fold up super small for travel, but are far more versatile than any of these table top options.
