University Football - season opener

Today the #2 ranked in the CIS (Canadian Interuniversity Sport) University of Saskatchewan Huskies took on the #8 ranked University of Alberta Golden Bears.

Most of the excitement came in the fourth quarter, which was when the first touchdown was. Generally, I wasn't having such a great day - not getting too many good action shots. Since it's the first game of the season, I looked for some stock shots for some of the players.

1. Alberta QB Quade Armstrong (#1) evades the wrath of Jay Bradshaw (#60).



2. The Huskies' Brian Guebert (#14) is one of their top defensive linemen veterans.



3. Huskies head coach Brian Towriss is now into his 23rd year as head coach of the team.



4. Huskies' rookie quarterback Bret Thompson (#8 ) calls the play.



5. A pack of Huskies mauling a lone Bear.



6. Huskies' running back Scott Stevens who has replaced his older brother David (ran out of eligibility) as lead RB.



7. Alberta's quarterback Quade Armstrong.

The U of S won 27-6 over the U of A.

Not a cloud in the sky, so I pushed them again a little... making some of the highlights blown. Most of these only have been cropped and usm for post-processing, with the others only having minor levels adjustment for contrast (just strengthened the shadows a wee bit).

Any crits? Next game is next weekend, and hopefully I'll be able to find some more action!

Nice shots. Really like #6. Good composition!

The colors look great. Playing on "FieldTurf?" We just put that in at our school, and the field looks great all the time. I like the way you can catch the rubber pellets flying up from their feet during action.

nice work mate, it is incredible to see shots from this year compared to when you fisrt posted. major improvement in every aspect from exposure to framing to the action in the frame. nice work and hopefully i can make it out to a field this year, last year was a bit of a loss for me

Good to see you again Jody! I guess it is safe to say that I've improved quite a bit in a year Got a 20D last December and have just been shooting since... then got some L glass this summer (thanks to working construction), so I am much better equipped than last season!

If you're even in town, let me know and I'll get you a media pass. They've just started that policy this year, requiring media passes to get in and shoot from the sidelines.

Cheers troutbreath That is brand new turf, just installed this summer and it's the first game played on it. Our stadium had major renovations just installed since we are hosting the 2006 Vanier Cup, which is the national championship for Canadian Interuniversity Sport Football. I can't wait to shoot that game

Good stuff -- excellent colors, framing and exposure. #3 is an exceptionally good pic -- it's not easy to get that much detail in eyes when they're shaded by a cap bill in harsh sunlight. The facial expression gives me a clue as to why he's had the job for 23 years.

I managed to convince our Editor-in-Chief and Sports Editor to run a full (minus two ads) page spread this week of five photos from this game on one of our colour pages. Plus there are two other shots on other pages as well. Hopefully that will become routine in the sports section every week

Next game is Saturday against our provincial rivals, and is the homecoming game, so it should be a great afternoon!
