Default Camera Specific Image Threads

I'm just wondering if having a specific image thread just for the Canon line up would be useful. I know we have a section to share our photos on different subjects but I'm also wondering would it be good to have say, 30D or 5D topics to show off your best work with that certain camera.

This idea has been floated before, and the general opinion is that it is better to keep them all in the same forum. Invariably, many questions are raised which pertain to all Canon DSLRs, and switching forums is not productive. The Mods might find it a nightmare as well.

Just my opinion. . .

Have Fun,

Sometimes it can be difficult enough to put a photo in the correct forum. I can just imagine the nightmare if we had camera specific forums. In most cases we would have no way of knowing for sure which camera was used because often the exif have been removed. (besides even if the exif were there I would not want to move photo share threads around in camera specific forums).

Just my opinion.

Already exists on pbase

Could be cool to have one here...
Agreed that it will be a pain to moderate

I think keeping then together is better. There are many similarities and features that cross over from camera to camera. Its nice to compare and get a sense of the differences that way IMHO.

I can't see it being helpful. There's many more variables that what body was used - such as what lens. I wouldn't want to see lens specific threads either - unless you're looking to buy a particular lens, they're not that useful.

There are some pictures that are uniquely or most easily possible with certain cameras - for example, if you need very high resolution, you have to use a 1Ds Mark II, if you want full frame fisheye you have to use a 5D or 1Ds Mark II, and for some types of sports and similar fast moving situations the 8.5fps of a 1D Mark II or 1D Mark IIN is helpful.

However, in many cases, the resulting picture is probably more about the lens, lighting and skill of the photographer (I venture that much of the time that list is in increasing order of importance). The exact body used is less important.

Overall, the choice of equipment to use depends on the types of photography to be undertaken as well as equipment already owned. I'm not going to choose a body because of some pictures that were taken by it.

There is (deliberately) a great deal of commonality between the different bodies anyway. Further, the changes between generations are much less than a few years back. The 1D Mark IIN only involves relatively small changes from the 1D Mark II. The 30D is similarly not a huge advance over the 20D - it's more an evolution whilst using many of the perfectly decent components of the older model. Even the 400D (Rebel XTi) isn't a gigantic leap over the 350D (Rebel XT) - at least not when you look back at the changes between, say, the 10D and 20D.

Agree with David ... actually more relevant to have shots posted according to type of lighting Light and exposure are more important than bodies. Most important is a good eye for a meaningful shot.

So I thought about this a little, and something popped into my head (Whatever it was, I hope it wasn't harmful), but it would require some assistance from the forum software.

Suppose there was a new type of "post a reply" button - one that displays a checklist of the various cameras. If you picked the one with the checklist you could check any and all of the cameras that are applicable to the reply, and a one line banner with those you selected appears at the top of your post.

But as I mentioned, the forum software would have to permit this - perhaps it already does. . .

I own and administer a forum using similar software to this one and I can tell you that features such as what you are asking for would have to be written in as modifications and this particular feature would be fairly complex to develop.

Oh well, it was just a thought - maybe in the next release. As I say at work, "The world is in the next release."

I peruse a few other photography forums (imagine that). Some of them have separated boards by manufacturer and then some even go so far as to sub divide them by type, 1 series vs prosumer. I really don't like it. There is so much that can apply to all types. What I have seen is the same poster putting the same post in both forums.

My two cents worth.
