I am still trying to figure this software out. As everyone says it is very slow. Sure that will change.
But for the life of me I can NOT figure out how to save file once edited. The save-as command is grayed out. And I assume LR like other is nondestructive. Meaning the editing changes I am making are not effecting the original at all

Correct, changes are stored in the LR database. Use File>Export to create a new file.
