Default Is a replacement for the 30D near?

don't know it that's a stupid question, but a salesman a local camera shop said there will be a $200 rebate in October and Circuit City has the kit on sale (although not that big of a discount)

Do the rebates and sales signify a new model soon?

or could it just be for the holiday season?

thanks

Hardly - it's only been out about 7 months!

Models seem to be replaced roughly on an 18-month cycle.

If you keep waiting for the best deal or the newest model, you'll probably wait forever - if you are ready for a DSLR and the 30d is right for you, then get it. It won't be superceded any time soon. the rebates most likely apply to the winter consumer feeding frenzy formerly known as Christmas!

The 30D was only released in March of this year. Canon typically has 18 months between bodies but they do deviate from this as well.

They also typically have rebates in the fall. I don't pay a great deal of attention to them but I don't think that it necessarily signifies a new body on the horizon.

thanks much

I've only recently become interested in the 30D so I'm learning more every day.

Looks like I've picked a good time to go shopping

Well, I think they may deviate from the regular cycle. But, I think if you are ready to use one and the 30D fits the bill, go for it. With tech, there is always the risk that the model you bought will be upgraded soon. You need to be secure that the model you're getting is what you want. Otherwise frustrattion may follow.

Far tooooooo much emphasis on gadetry rather than photography.
iso
shutter speed
aperture
focus
are the main ingredients, of any type of photography, the likes of Nikon, Canon Fuji, Olympus etc etc etc have us all on a string. The 30D is a great camera, and still will be in 10 years time.

The only improvements I want to see are with image quality. It is my belief that some of this wanted technology is already here but its let out in dribs and drabs to continue to entice us to upgrade all the time.

I think so too. But the camera makers will play all tricks to ensure that you upgrade.

I would not be surprised if a replacement comes in soon. 30D seems to be a 20D with only a little tweaks. I guess Canon was running behind in dSLR race when Nikon launched new cameras like D200(and then D80) and they made some new launches like 30D in a hurry. A replacement to 30D could well happen with a DIGIC-III processor and a 10 to 12MP sensor.

But unless they increase the size of the image, then surely an increase of pixels on a 1.6 crop will just introduce more noise as is currently being debated with the new 400D.

An addition I would like to see is shadow/highlight buttons linkled to the spot metering, and programmable to what depth they adjust the final exposure. The Olympus OM3 and OM4 had this, and possibly some other makes. Otherwise - face recognition and eye sensors in the viewfinder etc etc, is just more to go wrong and so not needed.

I do think too many people get hooked onto this must have sort of thing. I do admit that to a degree I am also guilty of being an equipment freak, but not as bad as some I'm glad to add.
Maybe I would be if I could afford to be?

Nothing wrong with having the best equipment, I would still love to have a hassleblad 500, beautifully built, reliable, and excellent quality, and none of the frills. If I was in a financial situation to be able to change over from my current gear to the hassle, I would in an instant.

i'm waiting for the announcement of the rebate on the 30D. hmmm...i'm hoping the $200 amount is not the "triple" amount that canon usually run in the fall. imagine $200 x triple rebate = $600 rebate on the 30D.

I doubt that canon will be that generous. Maybe triple $100 rebate, $300.
I could see a triple rebate for 5D being $500 to $600.

btw, I wasn't looking for an update to the 30D but rather an opportunity for a sale price if a new model arrives. I've already got my mind made up about the 30d

But as I was told, the local camera store will have a $200 rebate on the camera (not sure if it has to be the kit) in October.

If that's the case, I can hold on for a few more days and see if it drops even more at B&H
