I spent a challenging day at Silverstone shooting the British Superbike championship today for two reasons, I have man flu and also wasn't able to shoot the prior two days of action. However, it turns out Silverstone is apalling for shooting and thus I didn't miss too much by only being able to be there for one day! Funnily enough, ALL the other photographers felt the same and thus every photographer at the race was shooting one corner, albeit at different angles!
So, here's some uninspriring photos! All comments welcome! The winner of the Supersport race celebrates in style. ![]() Haslam leads the pack in brilliant sunshine! ![]() Kiyonari leads Lavilla: ![]() Kiyonari at full throtal: ![]() Lavilla chasing hard! ![]() One more of Kiyonari for luck which isn't very different but I like it: ![]() Last edited by Incomplete Pete : 17th of September 2006 (Sun) at 17:01. |

nice shots. Which focus mode do you ? I was at a bike race today and I used AI servo (with all nine points) and I think that was a huge mistake? I'm learning. Almost all of my shots were OOF.
Should I have used center focus on one shot mode? |

AI Servo and single point focus is the way to go for all sports photography. The AF works best on a single points that's in the middle, any variation tends to throw it off slightly. Also, with single point you can be accurate, as with 9 point you may focus on something other than the subject.

I love the shots. Wish I had a decent track in my area so I could get some track access.

Nice pics, closest I could get was VW Racing Suite, I suppose you were one of the million mile walking ones with the coveted blue media jackets?
Good weather for it though... up until 4 o'clock. What lenses did you use for the above shots? If you don't mind me asking.

Yea, those blue photo jackets are by far the comfiest I've ever used! All shot with the 300mm f2.8 with a 1.4TC strapped on. |

Only use one point and AI servo. I hardly ever use the centre point as it restricts the vertical aspect and in 99% of circumstances, the other points are more than accurate enough. You can use L or R to push the framing in the right direction, or the top one on the riders helmet to make sure you frame the front wheel correctly. Be creative with your focus points, but use only one.
