Default ST-E2 and 580ex in Manual Mode possible?

Is it possible to set the 580EX in manual mode while using the ST-E2 to trigger it? I have searched for hours and cannot find any info on doing this. I don't see why it couldn't but can't figure out how! Thank you in advance for the help

Yes it is. Just set the power level on the flash itself and make sure that the channels are set the same on both units.

Thank you PacAce! The problem is when I set it to slave I can't set the power. I know I am missing something easy here, but I just can't figure it out and the ettl light on the st-e2 won't go off no matter what

Put the flash to Slave mode. Then press and hold the mode button. "ETTL" will change to a flashing "M" indicating that it's now in manual mode.

No need to feel stupid. Some things on the flash, and the camera I might add, just aren't intuitive enough, and setting the flash to manual mode in Slave mode is one of them.

Why they didn't just make it so that you can simply press the mode button like you can in normal mode to manual is beyond my comprehension.

Thanks again PacAce, I had so much fun playing with manual mode today. Feels so good to be able to use science again instead of praying to the ettl gods=D Of course the 420 is still an issue, but I found using ratios it works ok as a backlight! Now I just need one more light for hair and I will be happy! I am starting to think I would like a strobe to use with a sofbox and then use the 580 as the hairlight, but I don't have a studio and am afraid of the portability
