You will probably find the 24-70 to be rather redundant. It's faster, and it's an L, but maybe you should consider going wider. An EF-S 10-22mm would go really well with your 17-85 IS. You would be amazed at just how wide it really is.

Or grab a 70-200 f/4 at least... You already have the 24-70mm range covered although the 24-70 is 2.8.

I'd say go with the 10-22 or a 70-200.

I'd love a 24-70L because I need f/2.8 pretty much all the time.... You may not find it benefits you that much, you could be better off going for something wider for the landscapes which I'm sure you come across...

Welcome!
You'll really enjoy your 30D. I just bought one as a back-up cam. and am having more fun than I ever expected with it The 24-70 would be a perfect lens for the 30D. (I used to own one and the IQ is excellent...) Again, welcome to the forum. Looking forward to futures posts.

Soaring eagle definitely has a point! Since you already have that range covered, you might consider a long zoom...depending on your budget, there are several options.

wow...what a monster truck. nice picture also.

I recommend you mount a small tripod on the passenger side. That way you can shoot lots of photos while u r travelling around the country. ))

Funny, my mom's best-friends brother is a trucker, but also does a lot of photography (he went to school for photography and was serious for awhile.)
