Default Jack Ingram @ The Graduate 7/23/2006

I shot Jack Ingram at The Graduate in San Luis Obispo, California, about an hour north of me for Rick Barker and Big Machine Records back in July but didn't post publicly so they could have first crack at the images. To this point nothing has come of it to my knowledge so I've decided to post them ... money did change hands so it's not like I was shorted.

Jack is very difficult to shoot. He doesn't really like a lot of light and he doesn't like any in his face ... but at least he doesn't wear a cowboy hat! This will give those who generally only see my casino images a chance to see that I do no better than they in these sub-optimal conditions. These images were processed by Porta, a free album application. I passed them to Porta "out of camera" so there may be edits that could improve them but I am so far behind now that I'll never catch up!

#1 One of a very few shot with flash.

#2

#3 The stage stuck out into the audience so anyone could simply walk around ... this is shot from in front of the restrooms.

#4 This is from a ramp on the side of the stage, again, accessible by anyone ... there were no All Access passes ... Jack is a very informal guy.

#5

#6 Hard to get my classic "head shot" in this venue.

#7

#8 I wanted to put a couple of "edgy" ones in here

I am interested to hear how you think these stack up against others' low light club images ... I don't see much difference myself. Sorry about the EXIF, but Porta doesn't seem to preserve it. There are more on my website at http://www.dwightmccann.com/Nashvill...006/index.html for your viewing pleasure.

I like the last one most Dwight, I'd think Jack would like it as well.

Well, your job is to get better pictures of Jack than these! At least Jack doesn't have a Purple Speedo story like Jimmy!

I think I'm gonna sell all my gear...I've never had this much trouble with a guitar!

I think those are great. I agree...the last one shows stage color and detail without feeling blown out...

Just stopped by to show my support

8 and 6 are my favorites, in that order (in shot 6 if I could see the guitar head I think that shot would the best)

The others "feel blown out"? They have detail right up into the highlights although the shadows are shadowier than I would like.

Anyway, you can see that mine are not much different than yours.

Dwight...was actually referring to mine with the flash (blown out)...I actually admire the exposures you got without using a flash...They are all GREAT photos...sorry for the confusion...

Thanks. I get a lot of great feedback even about my "club" shots but I often don't see the difference between mine and others ... I suppose I am just too critical of my own work since I know what's wrong. We all just need to keep working on what we are doing and trying to help/suggest/advise/mentor each other. Everyone has something to contribute.

Interesting photos Dwight... I'm following all the postings to get a better feel for the band, and the situation you were placed in, to get the pics...

The second picture interests me some...some of the pics seem to have that distant feel to them...Maybe the 400mm would have helped in this instance? Or is that just for the Casino.

I like #4 and #2. #8 would have been very nice if the eyes were in focus, and it were about a stop lighter...
Shooting focal lenghts of 200mm and below takes a bit of getting used to, doesn't it?
Doesn't look like it was overly dark, but thenn again there is no EXIF, so I can't tell.
By the way; the website needs a bit of work; it works okay in Firefox, but not in Safari:

Hey, I shoot from 15mm through 400mm at concerts and am equally inept, er, ah, um, I mean adept at all focal lengths. It wasn't horribly dark but it was hardly the casino.

Yes, well, the website ... I am using Porta for this section to save time. It is a freebie. Since I am not selling anything it is hard to justify more effort to conver to yet something else when I am already so busy. But thanks for the tip.

1, 5 & 7 are very nice indeed. Thanks for sharing. It makes me feel less depressed. LOL Not that they are bad at all, just that it's hard not to compare them to your casino shots sometimes and these are a little more comparable to what I get. So, maybe there is hope for me after all. LOL

--Melanie

P.S. Was it a good show?

Well, that's what I've been saying all along! I have no idea if it was a good show ... I was working.
