Default Moving ancient installation to new server

Hi all,
Apologies in advance if the question I'm asking has been answered before (which I kind of suspect) - in that case, a pointer to the right place would be greatly appreciated.

I have an ancient EE installation (2002!) on a server and the second (ancient) server with MySQL has just died. Since I have moved on to a new place, I'd like to finally move my EE site, too. I have a back-up of all the MySQL files.

Obviously, I'd like to install the most recent version. What's not entirely clear to me is whether I now have to follow the somewhat daunting upgrade path or whether I can do a clean 2.04 install and then somehow use my old MySQL files to "fix things up"...

Also, I obviously wouldn't like to label more than 1000 pictures from scratch.

Thanks in advance for any help!

OK - I have started the upgrade process. Received a few red error messages, started from scratch, still received the same ones, after (I think) following each step very carefully.
Now I have got as far as 2.0, but am running into some minor difficulties as in some galleries, the sizes of the pictures don't seem to be properly saved:

http://corpora.lancs.ac.uk/pictures/

This gallery seems to be doing fine: http://corpora.lancs.ac.uk/pictures/...19&ee_lang=eng

But this one has all the pictures in wrongly sized frames:

http://corpora.lancs.ac.uk/pictures/...13&ee_lang=eng

Any suggestion what might be going on?

In Menu
UTILITIES
· db backup/restore
· Database tools
· Performance graphs
· Error/debug logs
· Server info
· Install check
· Edit EE system files
· Rethumbnail
· Retrieve Photo Sizes

perhaps it works if you resize the thumbnails and original photos? That is, if you really have alle the original in place, same path and permissions.
