Default Frankie J

This is my second post in the performing arts section..... this is Frankie J. He is one of the top Latin R&B artists in the U.S. right now... The venue was Grahms Central Station in Mc Allen Tx. The concert was thrown by the radio station for free to celebrate the highest ratings in our area. I asked the radio station if they needed a photographer for the event, so they agreed to let me do it seeing that I was going to do it for free! They are throwing several more free concerts in the coming weeks, so hopefully i am able to shoot for them. All shots were taken with my brand new 24-70mm 2.8L... Av mode iso 1600 on most of them..... let me know what you think. I want to be able to improve for the upcoming concerts.

I know this last one is a little blurry, but I liked the way the background came out

#1 is nice, I like the lights in the background matching the direction his arm is going in - to me #2 would benefit from a bit tighter crop, perhaps putting him a little off-centre... I'd like to see #5 horizontal rather than vertical to get more of him or the crowd in...

they're good stuff, well done

Yay! Finally someone I recognize!

I like #1 and #5. I REALLY like #1, it's definitely the best here (although you probably knew that, which is why you put it first!). You might want to sharpen them for the web. I work with radio stations too, and they tend to go with the "less is more" idea - don't know if it will be the same way for you here. I usually pick out 5 max. Quality not quantity, right?

Radio stations also like crowd shots and pix of the sponsor signs. They can use them to share with the sponsors, to maintain a relationship with them. They will ask you back if you can help them out....

Cool gig. Nice work.

Cheers!
Jennifer

Looks much more like Hip Hop than Latin ... I don't see a single instrument. I think of Latin like this:

Dwight,

He's Latino....perhaps dou_b_14 meant to write that he is one of the top Latino R&B artists in the US, forgetting the "o" there. I believe he's originally from Tijuana.

Cheers!

I understand and wasn't questioning the correctness of the genre but there are no instruments seen ... is it a band or a guy who sings to albums? I have shot a lot of Latin bands/artists from Mexico and South America and they all have big bands, usually with an accordian or two and lots of strings. Is this "Latin" different from Juanes, Marco Antonio Solis, Pepe Aguilar and that ilk? And R&B is usually loaded with instruments!

He's hip hop - ie a guy who sings (or speaks) to records.

#6 would be my favourite - show a bit of interaction with the crowd.

Looks like some blown highlights (perhaps fixable in post processing) in numbers 1 & 3 and I wouldn't be displaying the last one as it is out of focus.

Looks like with the right post processing some of the problems I see in the images such as blown highlights and a bit of excess red in the shot with the crowd. If you shoot RAW these type of things are easier to correct with post processing. What type of camera were you shooting with?

Overall though some nice shots.

Thanks, Richard ... I would not have thought of that as R&B under any circumstances but I really do not mean to criticize Dou ... as most everyone knows I am music challenged to an enormous degree!

It helps us a lot of you can preserve the EXIF in your images if you are looking for suggestions on how you can improve the quality. With a 20D you should be able to amazing images in a decent venue.

You have some nice colors but several are soft and lack full dynamic range ... you could get a lot of help on that from the Post Processing forum if you are open to learning. More than anything else here we want to help you create better images. Somewhere in this quagmire I have a thread of my first eight bands ... yours have significantly more emotion and style than mine did, so if you feel picked on just go search for that thread.
