Default How do I get this effect?

I was browsing through a really good photographer's website (www.shadlambert.com) and I saw this new picture he posted and was wondering how to get the effect (pic below). Do I need a filter, or could I do these alone with some sort of effect on my 30D?

picture taken from www.shadlambert.com and shot by Shad Lambert himself.

He either used a blue filter over the flash or, most likely, he had the WB mistakenly set to Tungsten instead of Flash.

[EDIT: I just visited his website and he, in fact, did use Tungsten for that shot, as stated in the his web page.]

Yeah he was using the tungsten setting, and it also looks like he had a very bright light to the left of the camera for that shot.

what exactly does the tungsten setting look like? i read my canon instruction manual and it told me to goto this certain setting (the picture that it showed me looked like two triangles with a circle above them and in the middle) and then set it. so i did, and nothing looked blue or anything.

I can't say for sure what it looks like on your 30D, but on my S2, under the white balance function, the tungsten setting is a little picture of a light bulb.

Set your white balance to tungsten then use a flash pointed at the subject and place a warming filter/gell over flash to counteract the overall tungsten setting. this will turn the overall cast of the picture blue and give you a normal colour balance for the subject
