Default 5D Successor

Like some I am awaiting to see what will replace the 5D. I have a 20D now and I am not keen about upgrading to a 5D especially when dust is becoming a real issue for folks, hence the new Canon dust reduction system just announced.

So my wish is something between a 5D and those 1D's with dust reduction. I can handle sensor cleaning but this option should be on any successor along with the Picture Style option.

However if the only way to map dust is with Canons Photo Professional software that would be a problem, as I prefer to use CS2.

I would say it would be fair to day than a 5D successor would have the new dust cleaning thingy, not sure what else they could do to improve over the 5D without stepping on 1D territory. Could up it to the 16MP sensor, perhaps speed it up a little to at least 5fps, what else could be done?

I'd like to see the 12MP sensor put pretty much into the current 1D Mark IIN with digic III processing and the dust cleaner thingamijig.

That would be one sweet camera alright! Better AF, high speed shooting, weather seal etc.

It would be a significant step up from the current 5D but still leave Canon with room to move in upgrading the 1Ds.

How long has the 5d been out? About a year, right? I thought that Canon usually ran their cameras through 2 year cycles before introducing successors.

18 months seems fairly typical, I had a play with one in a shop a year ago, so we must be getting close...

There hasn't been a need the 1Ds Mk II has been so far out front of anything else offered by the rivals.

Very true, both in terms of ability and price!

both 1d's need to be updated, so does the 30d, its hardly an upgrade over the 20d.

Canon still holds their ground in a lot of aspects, but theres a lot offered by Nikon that Canon is really lacking in

look at what they are offering:
all nikons
better metering system, wider spread of AF points (is there really anything outside the middle of the viewfinder in the 5d?)

d2xs
Image Overlay and Multiple Exposure
The Multiple Exposure function creates a single image from up to 10 exposures. The D2Xs also offers an Image Overlay function that merges selected RAW (NEF) files already stored on the CF card to create a new image file within the camera.

The eye-level viewfinder features frame coverage of virtually 100% and a 19.9mm eyepoint. Information bars along the bottom and right edges display the current white balance mode, image quality and size settings, ISO setting and more.

In-camera Image Trimming
RAW, TIFF and JPEG images taken using the D2Xs can be trimmed within the camera to produce images of reduced display sizes ranging from 640x480 to 2560x1920 pixels. The smaller files that result can help improve workflow efficiency by eliminating the time required to download and perform software editing within a computer.

Lithium-ion Battery System with Even Greater Power
The EN-EL4a rechargeable lithium-ion battery retains the same form, but features significantly increased capacity that delivers enough power for up to 3400 shots per charge. The system's real-time status display gives accurate feedback on the percentage of remaining battery charge, the number of shots taken since the last charge, the overall status of service life, as well as notification when calibration is recommended. Furthermore, the Battery can be recharged at any time or any level, features extended service life, and performs well at low temperatures.

GPS support (optional)
With the optional MC-35 GPS Adapter Cord, location information such as latitude, longitude, altitude and heading (direction) can be transferred from a GPS device and recorded with the shooting data for each image.

they now have a grip with wireless ftp technology for the d200, where as canon only has it for the 1 series, and its 800 + a PITA

I shoot 300 pictures a day on the beach. Clear, horizon laden shots where boogers are in plain sight. Changing lenses about hmm... 20 times a day. I clean my sensor every Thursday after I ride shotgun on a boat/hobie excursion and soak my camera bag and threaten my 1D within one soaking of its' life.

I clean my sensor every 1800 shots, every 120 lens changes. In fine coarl sand conditions. If you guys worry about "DUST" and it holds you back from buying a camera you like, you're nuts.

Every film camera I owned needed a blow before swapping in film. Every 24 shots! Please, just go buy the camer a you want and stop fussing over the internet hype about dust.

Clone tool!
