Default 30D VS 400D??

I have a friend who wants a DSLR and have said 30D to her but she says why not 400D as it is cheaper and has more megapixels!

She shoots dog agility so they are going fast and needs something capable of taking good clear shots.

I have said the ISO on the 30D is higher which helps shooting something fast moving I believe.

Also 30D shoots more fps.

Is there anything else which makes on or the other better?

More megapixels in a sensor size which is similar isn't a good thing. 30D will do better in higher ISO's.

Can't argue against the cheaper aspect because money is always an issue.

It depends what you shoots most of all. The 400D is so freaking small, but if compact-ness is key, then can't go against that.

30D has a slightly bigger buffer. It has spot metering. Better at higher ISO's. It has 1/3 ISO stops vrs the 1/2 stops that the 400D has. It also has the wheel on the back which is very useful. I'm sure you know that having a 20D.

In the end, for what she does, it'll take good glass to do what she wants, above all.

i Have a 400d and it will be more than good enough for most people IQ wise would be about the same focus will be the same too and up to 400iso there's no diffrence as far as i can see the bigest diffrence is fps 3 or 5 for the 30d .
the 400d is a little gem of a camera .

The ISO performance of the two cameras is very similar. I would not let that be a deciding factor. The burst shot speed is a big difference. Five FPS vs three FPS is a definite advantage for the 30D in photographing fast moving subjects. The 8 vs 10 megapixels is not as much of an issue unless she is going to crop the pictures. If she uses the kit lens and can not get close enough to the action, the 400D’s few extra pixels may make some difference in ability to crop and still maintain acceptable image quality.

I have a 400D (and a 5D) and have not had the issues described by currymonster.

I have the 350D and 30D, and I must say that if you plan on shooting fast paced sports or anything high speed on a regular basis the 30D will better suit you (taking into account that the 400 is similar in performance except MP). I take a lot of action photo's of my pets and of course Hockey photo's, and the 5fps to me is worth the extra cost, it's amazing the shots you can get that you might miss with 3fps with high speed action.

I've only had the 30D now for a little over a week, and there's no going back to the 350D or 400D for sure! I tried to be objective when making my purchase, after all I could have saved a little money with the 400, but it just didn't meet my high-speed demands which was the most important thing to me (ISO 1600 performance, 5fps, larger buffer). I also agree the the 30D feels more substantial to hold when photographing with a big lens, and the wheel dial makes is so much easier to adjust "on the fly" when I'm shooting hockey. I feel that the 30D has given me what I really needed in a camera, which I didn't realize until I owned one.

Just my $.02

Shutter life expectancy is the big factor for this snap-happy shutterbug. 100,000 snaps for the 30D vs 10,000 on the Digital Rebel 300, 350D and 400XTi. For me that settles it! Although I just bought a 400XTi because my 350D is near it's 10,000 mark and I can't afford a failure on a shoot, you can bet I will order that 30D as soon as it is back in stock to replace my 350D and keep the new 400XTi for a back up. Thank goodness I've purchashed both bodies from Costco.

I think it is not 10000 clicks the shutter life but it is 50000 clicks for the 350D/400D

Yes, it is 50,000 although they can go earlier of course, I have heard of several failing in the 30,000 range. Equally I know of at least one 350D whichs has got past 100,000 without the shutter failing.

As a 400d-gonna-be-purchaser its eye opening reading some peoples comments

To me its a step into the DSLR world and not into professional photography (for work purposes) but more a hobby

My view is that the 400d ticks a lot of boxes for everyday type of use rather than specialist use and with its more compact size is more user friendly and appealing to me

Need some more 400d comments from people with the cam to keep my credit-card-hand hot

I've had one for a week and I love it. I like it for all the reasons the critics don't. It's small, lightweight and takes great photos. I travel a lot so this is important. I also do many motorcycle trips and I want something I can put in my tankbag or hard cases.

I could have bought anything in the store that I wanted and I narrowed down to the Xti and D80. I went with the Xti because I thought the D80 was too heavy and for $300 more (they only had the kit) I wasn't getting much over the Xti. I also didn't like how Nikon was forcing me into a $300 lens I didn't really want. The Xti kit lens may not be the greatest but it's cheap which lets me save some money and choose a lense I really want.

And I've always thought Canon digital cameras produce the best images. When I compare images from Canon and Nikon, there is always something I like about the Canon images better.

I have to point out that with the current rebates, a new 30D purchased with another item so that you qualify for the double rebate will be only about $100 higher than an 400D. I'm trying to decide myself right now.

Yea, you have to buy two items on the list but give me a break, who here doesn't want another excuse to buy more Canon gear.

Basically a 30D/350D/400D will all be identical when it comes to image quality, the 10Mp on the 400D will not make a huge difference, the main thing is features & handling, as it states in the review of the 400D in this months photo mag, "Millions prefer the smaller size of the 350D/400D" as apposed to the rather bulky "brick like" size & weight of a 30D.

Its all down to what feels best in YOUR hands, the lens has the biggest impact on quality at the end of the day.

At this moment in time there isnt a camera that is significantly better in the 8Mp area, they are all very much alike & the images produced are the same.
