Default 100mm or 150mm Macro Lens?

Hi,

I need a nice macro lens to take with me to Australia. Most people seem to like the 100mm Macro - is it purely because it is a lot cheaper - or is there another reason that I have missed. I hope to be trying my hand at some wildlife and forna photography.

Thanks.

Both are very good lenses. I owned the 100mm macro for a little while to try my hand at macro photography, but never got into it. The few shots that I did take with it, I was extremely impressed with. Nice sharp, crisp images produced from the lens.

Even though it's a Nikon, my brother has the 150mm Sigma macro on his D70 and, again, is an excellent choice for a macro lens. It gives you a little more reach compared with the Canon 100mm, too.

I had the same dilema when I was looking for a macro to take to Asia.......... ended up with the 150 sigma thanks to the extra working distance and could not be happier.

I chose the sigma 150 also. I couldn't be happier with it. As stated previosly, it is very sharp.

I have some shots taken with a 2x Sigma teleconvertor attached here - http://www.photography-on-the.net/fo...d.php?t=213180.

You do loose AF with the TC attached though.

I forgot to include my experience so far with Sigma focus problems (this is my first problem out of 3 sigma lenses). The focus issue was with the 120-300 f/2.8 not the 150 macro. But I just wanted to give an example of how Sigma is handling it.

Here is a link to a thread I started on Sigma service - http://www.photography-on-the.net/fo...d.php?t=221622. The last post by me is the best indication of their service IMO. But I don't have my lens back yet, so take it for what it's worth.

Good luck with your decision,
Travis

I have a 180mm macro from Canon. I chose it because of the distance to subject is the farthest. There is a good sticky about macro somewhere on this website.

Yes it is. After reading it, I decided on the Canon 100 2.8.

Here is the link.

Had the Sigma 105mm, and sold it to get the 150mm. The extra distance is nice....

I own the Canon 100 macro and 180 macro. I have used the Sigma 150 macro. All are good although personally I think Canon has an edge. That however is not why I am writing. If you are shooting insects, you will want to get all the working distance you can and you will want to go for a longish macro. Be aware however that when you get into long macros like the Sigma or Canon you will be putting a lens on that weighs about three pounds and one that makes camera stability in awkward positions questionable. The 100 macro weighs only about a pound, can be used with a teleconverter ( a short extension tube is needed with the Canon TC ) with good results.

I agree with Larry's comments. I have the Conon 100mm and the MP-E 65mm, one day I might get the 180mm bit not for the moment.

The 100mm is IMHO a more viable lens for general macro work and handheld work for insects due to the weight. The 180mm gives more working distance but is much heavier, this becomes an issue handheld. Also if working in natural light this brings camera shake in to the equation earlier. More WD sound great with insects but it can be a problem also when working in thick undergrowth. Also the longer the lens that harder it is to find your subject in the viewfinder.

I know the sigma 150 is well thought of also, but again it is that bit heavier.

For things like dragonflies that don't need much magnification but are hard to get close to I use a 300 f4 IS + tubes.

Like Larry I sometimes use the 100mm with a EF 2X TC and a 12mm tube for compatibiity, this works well as long as you remember the camera does not report the effective apature and open up to avoid difraction softening.

What other lenses are you taking on your trip and what else besides macro will you be doing? When you say macro do you mean 1:1 or will 1/2 size be ok?
