Default Shooting into the sun...

I read that if you shoot into the sun, that you can damage your eyes but most imporantly your sensor. I like to shoot sunsets, so how do you something like this:

without shooting directly into the sun?

That is a good question. My guess would be the sun is so low when this pic was taken that it is not bright enough to damage anything. A 12 o'clock noon sun is a different story.

Yes, it is safe.
Just do not aim your camera at bright, full, mid day sun for too long, that's all.

Your camera has built in metering which isn't going to allow you to let in so much light that the sensor gets damaged. Now, if you were using manual settings, I suppose you COULD damage it, but I wouldn't worry too much. When you look through the viewfinder, if the scene doesn't hurt your eyes, then it's probably ok.

I wont say "hurt" my eyes, but when I do look through view finder for a while trying to eye up a shot, I do get a little blind eyed when I'm done looking into the view finder.

Eh, you will get that looking at a bare 60w light bulb... If it HURTS, then look out. Even then, it shouldn't be a huge issue, because you can't snap your eyes open, then closed in 1/4000 second, and your camera can. Just don't worry... You aren't going to hurt it. Get out and shoot.

If you break it, it is a good excuse to upgrade to like a 5D or something...

It is not safe looking through a magnified lens . Not good in my opinion.

ChrisBlaze,
Yes it is safe to shoot directly into the sun. I have numerous times on two different DSLR's and never had a problem (except for my eyes).

It's perfectly safe for the camera to shoot sunsets. The difficulty lies in metering the shot properly. I usually meter the sky, with the sun just outside the viewfinder and adjust based on the histogram.

I was tracking some birds with my 200mm with a 2x t-con with the shutter button pressed down. The bird flew right into the sun and before I could stop myself I snapped a pic of the noon sun right in the frame (I was in manual too). Blinded me for a few mins and the pic didn't look like much but the sensor seemed to have survived. I just wouldn’t want to try that too many more times.
