I just started getting seriously into photography about 2 months ago and I've already lucked out with some pretty subjects in the past few weeks.

A 17mm lens is a 17mm lens no matter what format. The effective field of view stated in 35mm terms, when used on an EF-S camera, will be roughly 28mm.
