Here's a couple from the ZZ Top concert I shot three years ago. For the last one I was trying to go for an old school feel with the noise.

I went out on Friday night to take some pics of a local cover band...they are mates and as it was the 1st time I had done anything like this I was so disappointed when I got back home...trying to achive good images with the natural lights around is quite hard i found. Took some with flash and others without but my 24-105 f4 wasn't up to shooting the low light stuff...did get a few wioth my 50m f1.8 but if I want to do this again I need to get a faster lens I reckon - what do most people use?

That image was taken at 1/64 sec, f/2, ISO 500.

Use higher ISO to give you more leeway, both a higher shutterspeed and a bit more DoF.

That helps a stop

You loose the IS though, so remember to mind your shutterspeed because you will get camera shake sooner. (Then again; with moving subjects you should mind your shutterspeed anyhow)

Thanks Rene for the heads up... My 24-70mm F2.8L is the go to lens and a carry around lens most of the time... But like you point out, the lack of IS makes it a borderline OK lens for stage shots... I've more often than not, lost the sharpness and had to settle for less than perfect shots because of faithful devotion to it...

Oh, sure, it's an L, and F2.8 is pretty fast... but for shows, it really isn't... The 70-200mm F2.8L IS, makes the grade nicely... It and my prime, 50mm f/1.4 are most reliable of them all... Hope to find time to do a show or two soon again.

Love these great post's y'all... Cheers!!!

Cheers both...so what we are saying then is that the f4 with IS was as good as the f.28 without? Oh well, will have to seel some bits n pieces and invest in the 70-200 IS which everyone raves about...need to get a job to do that methinks...or go back to landscapes..lol
