Wow! Those are some fantastic shots, especially the last one of the Great Blue. I wish mine came out that well. I am not sure if it is a distance problem (too far away), a focusing issue with the lens, or just the photographer.

Do some tests with inanimate objects...the lens is excellent in general, but your particular one could conceivably have a problem.
BTW, all those shots were hand-held.

Looks like the lens is just fine. I have taken some shots of a few things that have come out wonderful. I need to spend more time getting used to the lens and making sure that I remember to have a high enough shutter speed to reduce camera shake, etc.

Fantastic, plsurfer. I know that you will love the new glass. I look forward to seeing your first photos with it. I was just looking at the photos in your gallery. The action shots of the surfers are fantastic!

Adding a few more to the archive. Both of these are taken with the 1.4x TC on a 1DMK2. The addition of the TC makes it a little harder to extract maximum image quality and it's easy to blame the glass when it's usually focusing errors or poor long lens technique that's at fault.

wow, amazingly sharp and contrasty even with the TC. Nice shots foxbat, i hope the 300 f/4 performs this well with a tc.
