Default Suggestions on Telephoto Lens for G2

I have a G2, and one of my hobbies is tracking my car in autocross events with my friends, while taking action pics. The optical 3x zoom on my camera is very disappointing, and shows my subject looking like specs in the photos. I need a set of powerful zoom lenses, so I need your suggestion on some good quality ones, preferably ones that do not leave a blur on the outside edges. What do you think of the ones on ebay, like this:

2.5x
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...category=30066

3x
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...category=30066

I was unable to find anything more than 3x. Is there a reason for this?

Hi Thoe,

I (personally) would keep my hands off the first offer. The reason mainly is that I have *never* heard about that brand in any review done by a somehow respectable site.
There are known brands like Canon, Olympus, Tiffen, Kenko, Raynox and others ... this brand is not one of them.

I do not know the Kenko KUT-300, but I observe that it has 37 mm threads (Olympus: 55, Canon: 58). That might cause vignetting, if the camera is not fully zoomed in. I own the Kenko LD20T (KNT20) that has to be used fully zoomed in on the G2

There are converters with a greater magnification. Search for the Crystalvue 8x32 (some threads here in the forum) and the EagleEyes 5,5. The example pics of the EagleEyes show you what vignetting can amount to.

The crystalVue did get some very good reviews here and obviously does not have vignetting.

Regards,
Andy

Actually, these little multiplying lenses do no justice either. I need something like 300mm lenses. Will Canon's SLR telephoto lenses work/fit with the G-series cameras?

No, the Canon SLR lenses can not be fixed to the G series.

The G2 as about 100 mm focal length. If you mount a 3x converter (KUT-300), you'll get an eyuivalent of 300 mm on a 35 mm SLR.

If you use the CrystalVue 8x lens, you'll get an equivalent of 800 mm on a 35 mm slr ... that should do the job, right?

Regards,
Andy

Ok, I looked up the CrystalVue 8x, and read about it. I'm gonna get it, but what's the difference between that and the LX one?

Hi I'm also looking for zoom lens that will fit my G3 will this lens fit a G3? and if so what all do I need to make it work on the G3? I was looking at the Telephoto lens, and was thinking of buying. Will this give me the zoom I want? I want to be able to get close up's of wild life, landscape, sports ect,

Thoe88...

The LX is the only one that will work with the Gx series, stay away from the other one.

Gail, it says on the site that you can use it with the G3, assuming you buy the correct lens adapter for it...

Does anyone know if there is such a thing as a zoom adaptor? I would be more interested in the manual zoom capablilty rather than the power, as I could do away with the dumb 'zoom by wire' the G3 has.

I did see a zoom adaptor a few years ago, it was a Vivitar, not sure what it was designed to be used for.

I have a G3 and bought the Canon adapter and teleconverter. When installed they block about 85% of the view finder forcing you to use the LCD to view the shot. For action pictures this is very difficult under reasonably well lighted conditions.

I have the canon teleconverter as well as the crystalvue lx. They are both excellent lenses in my opinion. The thing i like about the crystalvue lx is the ability to manual focus similar to an slr (after setting the g3 to manual so it doesn't continually move, plus the manual focus box on the lcd display aids in the manual focus of the crystalvue lx). The canon 1.75 provides good magnification and can be used, if necessary, without a tripod if you are not moving and have a very steady hand. The crystalvue lx MUST be used with a tripod.
