Default A Winter Wedding with a Fun Couple!

Looks like this weekend was a big one for winter weddings with all of the posts. I had a really fun, creative couple and a lot of time for portraits (my favorite), so this week's contribution is a little portrait heavy...and they seem to be kissing an awful lot. Also, I hope I'm not disqualified from these Canon boards because I shot a couple of them with my new Nikon D80 (insert smiley here - can't include it with 8 images)!!!

Nice! I like the dance shot with the tree in the back!

And why did you get a D80? What was so great about it that you had to get one? Just curious.

Jamie..what an interesting looking wedding. I am not sure I grasp what was going on and that interferes with my ability to appreciate the images for all they are, I think. That said, from a tech standpoint I don't see anything that stands out. The empty space in one leaves me a bit anxious...waiting for the mirror. The last one is a great dance capture...is tha off-camera light or a spot? Overall good work.

So, let us know how the nokiN is...

Thanks for the comments guys!

Scott, no real story here, just trying to be creative with the "formals" at night. I can definitely see where you're coming from on #1 - I go back and forth on it myself!

For those that asked about the Nikon, it was really an impulse purchase. I'm transitioning to a 5D in January when I can put it on the '07 books, and rather than have 4 Canon bodies, I thought I'd try to trade the 30D for a D80. I've always wondered how life is on "the other side"... Long story short, I ended up with a Nikon D80, a Tamron 17-50 f2.8, and a SB800. If nothing else, I thought the body integrated AF would help me focus when I'm using a radio transmitter in the hotshoe.

Longer story short, and I really like this little Nikon. The controls make sense, the viewfinder is big and bright, and the wireless commander mode is so liberating. Shot #2 and #8 were with the D80 and SB800. For the shots in the woods I put it on a lightstand, for the group formals I put it on a lightstand at the church and fired it through an umbrella, at the reception I carried it in my pocket and set it down on various ledges, tables, the floor, behind the cake...off camera lighting is so easy with this setup.

That elevator shot is cool! I love the xmas tree in the background in the last one. It's so much fun when they give you lots of time for pics. I like the simplicity of the shots, and your creative use of plain/regular backgrounds and lighting.

Nice photos Jamie! That D80 sounds tempting. Does that Nikon wireless have an equilivent of ETTL or is it full manual?

Thanks Jess and Tim.

Tim, that's the beauty of the Nikon wireless system - full TTL control of the the remote flash from the camera body...including FEC. And you can controll flashes on two different channels independantly, so you can give +2 FEC to off camera flash 1 and +1 FEC to off camera flash 2 and -1 FEC to the pop-up flash for a little fill. It is IR based like the Canon wireless system so you still have the line of sight restrictions (i.e. it's not quite as versatile as a set of radio slaves), but it worked 90% of the time on Saturday.

^^ and isn't that the way it should work! ...I could never understand why Canon does not have some sort of built in master flash function.

We also plan to add a 5D next year, and had been looking at the Nikon D80 as well (because it's price is so attractive compared to getting another 30D). I like the sound of this flash capability - so thanks, Jamie, for pointing this out.

Oh, and I love your work - excellent stuff! I think we're going to have to start insisting on more time with Bride/Groom.
