Whatever adjustment you want to do then mask it back in. Most people do the channel-mixer, then just mask back what you want to be in colour. But for fun you could try hue saturation and then just pull 70% of the colour out and then mask back. it gives a new feel to selective colouring.

Sounds interesting, could you please post an example?

I do a duplicate layer, then I'll either use the "colorize" and set the hue and saturation to 0, or I'll use the Channel Mixer. Then I erase what I want in colour, and merge my layers.

Duplicate layer, make the top layer b/w, then add a mask, then "paint" back in the areas I want to show color. Is there a simpler way?

Doesn't get any easier than that.

what is this "mask" everyone is talking about? And what is the history brush. Man I need a tutorial. I always just use the hue/sat, and lower all the colors I don't want to show, doesn't always work.

I use the "duplicate layer - hue/saturation - erase what I want in color" technique previously mentioned.

make a duplicate layer, select the history brush, desaterate the new layer and then brush what you want to be color and the color will appear.
