Yes, 8 months is overkill. Unless there's something you are providing that is super duper, you shouldn't be over a months worth of work.

Well, how fast do the couples generally take to place the final order?

It usually takes around 90 days, assuming you meet with the client to choose album shots, PP each shot individually, create each page for submission, and wait for the company to get it back to you. That's usually how long it is if you deal with Graphistudios or Visionart.

I'm the exception, I turn around in about 3 hours. I take before wedding or right after ceremony pictures and have 10-12 PP for the reception in the evening all in frames and displayed. I hand the friend the disk and walk away. It's great. But I don't get much money either. For pro jobs, I guess around 1 week to show a few PP shots and some thumbnail prints for proofs. Then ordering prints depends on how many to PP.

oh.. did I mention that I'm the client!? I mean, how hard is it to place an order for the albums and then putting them together.. It definitely sucks.. especially when I was promised a certain date and it doesn't get met..

Album design, approvals, and delivery can take a very long time. I've been able to produce a finished album in a few months, but it just depends on the client. Sometimes it can take longer, especially if the client wants to add pictures or change pages - - it can get dragged out. I've heard that many pro's require a year to finish a custom designed album. I guess it just depends on all the factors.

How long ago did you give your final decision on the make up of the album?

Two months should be the maximum from final decision. But delays might add one more month.

Remember - there's typically a 4 week or so turnaround from the album people too - that's out of the control of the photographer. Also depends how busy they are, when you submit the images you want in the album to them, how long it takes for approval, etc. I'm just now getting images from most of my summer brides to design their books.

Check your contract with the photographer. A good contract outlines the turnaround time.
