Default Photoshop Actions

I've read all the posts about Kubota Actions and Showit effects and some of the other favored actions for PP on these forums, but I just have a semi-simple question.

Both of these programs/actions are out of my budget right now and of course I always do my own PP like level adjustment, USM, contrast, curves, but the dramatic effects created by Kevin Kubota are astounding.

What could I do to achieve even HALF of the effects that Kubota Actions do? I hope I'm being clear, I'm not trying to "copy" his actions, but find a way to create my own personalized actions.

Do you guys have any actions you have custom created and saved and use regularly in weddings or portraiture?

What are they mostly composed of? Curves, levels, color layers?

Thanks!
Jamie

Just for some examples: Jessica Strickland has amazing colours, as does Jessica Claire.

Complicated curve upon curve layer? channel mixer?
I have a lot to learn!

No idea at all? Just playing around for hours in photoshop until you achieve the desired effect? I'm willing to do that, but I'd just like to know if it's curves/channel mixer/colour layers or what!
