Default one feature I would like....

when in manual mode when you initially press the shutter to meter if your shutter speed could get near what it needs to be then you can adjust it from there would be handy.

I take a lot of low light club pictures using ISO 1600 or 3200 (F 1.8) When I need to get to my SS FAST and use the dial in rapid jolts over and over to get to where I need to be just takes too much time to get there sometimes.

Manual mode would not be manual anymore if once you press the shutter button halfway, the settings would start jumping around.
Why not use Av instead?

In 3 flicks I can get from around 1/100th, to 1/4000th. How much of a change in light are you dealing with in the clubs?

You just need more practice, you will soon work out how much of a flick you need to give the wheel to move between different shutter speeds.
I can generally give it a flick or two, and get to with in 1 or 2 clicks of where I want it to be.
Thats with 3 months of heavy use since I got the camera, and several months useing borrowed 20Ds.

You would still have full manual control. Unlike any other mode where you have partial control.

Excuse me? I can control aperture, shutter speed and ISO in Av, Tv, or Program (that's right - all 3). If you can't, you might want to review your manual (book).

Put your camera into P.
Now turn the main control wheel, the shutter speed will go up or down as you add or remove Exposure Compensation.
Now turn the small control dial, the aperture and shutter will go up or down in whats called Program shift.

In Av and Tv, the same thing happens by adjusting EC on the main control wheel, and your chosen variable on the other small dial.

It does exactly what you suggested. The camera sets what it thinks is the ideal exposure, and you make a small adjustment to get it to your ideal exposure.

I don't think so. If you let the camera set the approximate exposure, then you adjust it, you might as well just use Av - you'll automatically get the fastest available shutter speed possible; then use EC via the Quick Dial to adjust for light variations, or use the main dial to change the aperture.

I think I understand your idea, but it would be better served by the * button otherwise after you have made the final adjustment, it would be lost again when you press the shutter button again.

In other modes * to lock exposure, in manual mode * to quickly bring the settings to the "through the lens metering", then you can tweak, is that right?

would still be awkward as to where your shutter speed and apertures would end up?

This is called Av or Tv mode.

No really. It is.

Think about this one though. Shooting M with that "feature" would in reality suck. Every time you want to prefocus you'd have to re-meter.

Photolistic, I clearly understand your problem, but your approach isn't good. While it might work for you, in 99% of other situations people would just curse Canon for having done this.
A different way would be if you could use <JUMP> as a step modifier (that button has little functionality anyway). That is, when you keep pressing the <JUMP> button, the dial steps would be 1 whole stop at a time, otherwise 1/3 stop.

Maybe that would be a better feature.
