Default Cardinals

I took these last weekend when we still had snow and before the Sharpshinned hawk paid me a visit. The female is full framed while the male is about a 55% crop and has been run through Neat Image. Both were taken through the glass of my patio door.

I would love to just see such delightful birds let alone capture them as well as you have. Excellent well done.

Nice shots through the glass. She's a young one - you can tell by the little bit of black still on her beak.

Nice shots, especially since they were shot through glass! Well done.

Nice work Stephen;

I really think that the patio door window will be a bit difficult to carry i n the field.

Liz thanks for the tip on how to age female cardinals. I had not heard that before.

Thanks Keith.

Ted, if you can carry that 500mm F4, tripod etc. then a patio door would NOT be a problem for you !!!!

What.....do you have Canon Glass on that Patio Door? Or maybe its made by Sigma? Two very nice Cardinal shots Stephen and I would not have guessed they were shot through a window. I still find cardinals to be one of the most skitish birds...always a challenge. Looks like an elongated rain or snow drop just to the top right of the male's beak. Nice!

Thanks Gary. You're right about the elongated snow flake.

The female had perched (as I had hoped) on a branch that I had mounted near the feeder* which is located closest to my patio door. The male was on the squirrel baffle on the peanut feeder post.

* I had to keep it far enough away so that the grey squirrels wouldn't use it for a launching pad to the feeders.

Stephen, with the "mild" weather were experiencing you could open up the door a bit and stick out the lens through the opening? I do this alot, making my wife complain about the cold kitchen floors! I like how the male is seemingly looking up at the falling precipitation.
