Default need new glass

My son spent his first day at parris island today. His Grad day is in Apr. I need a lens that will shoot 50-75 yards and give a3/4 to 1/2 body shot.and my budget is 500 -700 dollars. What can you recommend?

If the day is really something that you want to capture, you mgiht consider renting a high quality lens for the day. A several thousand dollar lens can be rented for 40-80/day. You'll get more reach and better quality.

Otherwise a 70-200 f/4, 300 f/4 IS, or 400 f/5.6 can all be had used that might get you within that range and still have good quality.

You need to specify with what camera body. It's going to be different if your shooting with a 30D than with a 5D.

The Canon 70-300USM IS is a great buy coming in at the lower end of your range. At 300 mm it will give you a frame about 7 feet tall. To get more reach the Tokina 80-400 for about $650 will get you a bit closer with a frame 5 1/2 feet tall so it's getting close to your 1/2 body shot. But to really get the 1/2 body, maybe the Sigma 170-500mm. It will give you a frame about 3 1/2 feet tall. There are other lenses that long but they cost a bit more.
