Most macro ppl seem to use the 430-EX over the reing jobbies due to the said resons above - more natural light angle. I did a bit of research into the Sigma alsternative and found it to be a very satisfactory replacement for the same purpose.

I use the 430-ex with OS-2 cord alone, I have not bothered with the bracket as yet due to cost and its sheer bulk. Somehow I manage to hold camera with one hand and the flash with the other.

If you want sample images its a good idea to just go through the posts and check equipment users have or ask.

When I was still doing film macro I used this same method. However, there I was using a 50mm lens with a 2x macro converter, which was a very compact and easy to balance with one hand. I've found that it's very difficult to balance my digital camera with the Sigma 105 (worse if you've got tubes attached) with one hand. (I'm also sure that Mark (Bandit1) feels much more comfortable with his new support gadget.) Hence the reason for using a flash bracket.

It is but I replaced the ball head which was too weak (kept creeping with a 430ex) with a cheap but stronger one from Jessops (as shown).
