At the moment CRTs still win when it comes to color fidelity and response. LCDs are good though, you just need to get a decent one and put a little time into calibrating it. Get a decent name brand, and get at least their middle of the line models. The widescreen version are nice as the extra screen space lets you kick all your icons and stuff to one edge and still work with everything else full screen.
Personally, I'm happiest with dual 17" screens. I went with dell ultrasharps and they are just fine. Switching to an LCD will be nice, you'll discover acres of desk space you never new you had.

I remember hearing that dell had the same monitor as apple but was selling it for a lot less (it wasn't in the same casing). Is this still true? I would like to find a LCD monitor that is as good or better than apples cinema displays, but cheaper. Any recomendations?

small correction, both displays are made by LG phillips but the idea is the same. honestly, even if there is some advantage in IQ when going CRT, in my own opinion, the difference is minor and the advantages of a wide screen that looks good and doesn't take half your table is far greater. i LOVE my dell ultra sharp 20.1" wide screen.

oh it sure is!
another interesting thing about LCD monitors is that they're healthier for your eyes because they don't produce the flicker that CRT's do. also, i usually spend alot of time on the computer at night and i've found that its been easier for me to fall asleep after staring at the LCD screen compared to when i was staring at the CRT for that reason.
