Default Vacation Shots with the S45

I have a new Canon S45 and I love using it. The problem is that I am going to London/Paris in 3 days and I am still having problems with some details. Any help would be appreciated.

*Any general advice for taking great shots?
*My night shots usually are too dark with the flash, but look better without the flash. Is there a prefered way to take a night shot?
*When I take a picture, I have to hold down the button for a few seconds - is there a way to take a picture faster?
*What is the difference between portrait and landscape? I think I understand, but not 100% clear.

Thank you again for any and all help.

*Any general advice for taking great shots?

-Practice practice practice...
-Also, when you have time to, examine your image in the finder or LCD. Look for mistakes such as stuff that should not be there (no garbage pail, please), or stuff that should be but's not (oops missing feet.) Is your focus good (green border)? Is your camera shake warning not on? Is the lighting good... You might be able to grab a few books from your library to read on the plane.

Use a tripod and manual exposure.

Most of this time is likely the camera trying to lock focus. You can prefocus, or use manual focus to help here.

*What is the difference between portrait and landscape? I think I understand, but not 100% clear.

Portrait will try to keep 'only the subject' in focus, were as landscape will try to keep 'subject and background' in focus. This is done solely by aperture (though landscape may include some calculations, I don't know.) Using the mode does not mean it will turn out 'correctly.' The modes only 'try' to do what you want, but depending on the lighting, may actually fail. Portrait uses widest aperture it can, landscape uses smallest....

Take 'extra' shots too, sometimes the unusual view or pose is much much better than what you first took. When in doubt, take extra shoots at different settings (you can always delete them, but you can't reshoot easily after you get back). Have fun and don't spend all your time behind the view finder!

Don't forget to pack the camera manual and a book or two on photography.

Thank you for the information. My dad gave me his old tripod, so now I need to make sure the camera fits. What do you mean by manual exposure?

Is there a way to take a picture "faster"? It seems like I have to hold the button down for a bit before the picture takes. Is there a way to adjust this?

Hi,

Most tripods will fit, though some threads on the older machines may be too long. If so, use a washer so that you don't damage the tripod socket.

The camera may 'max out' in auto mode at one second. you may be able to switch to manual to gain exposure ranges up to 15 seconds.

The delay one you press the button is likely the time it take to crank the lens around looking for focus. If you pre-focus, and lock focus, then your photo lag will be much much shorter. This won't work so well when the subject is moving all over the place.

Thank you for your suggestions. With the tripod, I was able to get some incredible night shots. I took over 1300 shots and really got some great practice with my camera.
