I have only one bad habit - smoking. Being in work I have to go outside to have a cigarette. It's bad enough that it's gorgeous here - currently 54F. But every single time I've been outside today I've heard some geese, and waited to watch them fly by. The birds are out there singing, and our resident hawk has flown by.
I'm currently about 2 miles from Great Meadows Wildlife Refuge, and I'm stuck in work. This sucks.

Think yourself lucky you Don't live in the UK.
Smokers are treated like lepers!!! its okay for half the population to go out, get smashed on alcohol, vomit, urinate and fight all over the streets every Friday and Saturday night resulting in more drink related problems than anywhere else. It's even okay to go out and take illegal drugs - drug abuse is at an all time high (no pun meant) in the UK) But if you smoke you are scum, that has to be constantly told you are stupid and ignorant, have warnings over all sides of a cig packets in 36 point bold text (which they would like to change to photos of rotting organs). See constant ad bombardments on TV (never anything about alcohol). And you get the privilidge to pay stupid prices for a pack of 20 - approx £3.50-£4.00 ($6.54-$7.48)

Yeah, in the US we're treated with less than enthusiasm, but not so bad as you describe. We certainly do have enough drug and alcohol-related problems, but our wonderful legal system seems to take care of them fairly well.
But $7 a pack? Ye, gads, I pay about $3. I think I'd quit at $7. Yeah, right.

I am jealous. Still got the "Mallards on Ice" thing going on up here. No matter for the next couple of days cause I dropped the 10D and lenses off a Canon Service this morning to have them "calibraited" and they wont be ready till Wednesday. Scott, you can always stick cotton in your ears when you go out for a break. I feel for you though for I too partake of dried tobacco rolled into a tube. However I am on the road all day so things are different for me. But I still feel for you.

A very distant cousin to the Canada Goose, the world famous ****ehawk. Got those all year round up here. Funny thing about them is they can sometimes fly in V formations just like geese, and from a long way off can look like geese. When I had my guiding service, customers were always saying "Hey look over there...geese" Sorry bud....****ehawks....lousy eating.

You should consider yourself lucky as it has been said. You have the chance to see these beautiful things. Some people go to work at dark and leave for home in the dark. As a luxury yacht builder in British Columbia I frequently get the chance to work outdoors. In the past 6 years at this job I've been fortunate to see eagles, swans, geese, loons, blue herons, hawks, weasels, otters, seals, coyotes, and mink. Rarely do I have my camera while I'm working as the bosses frown upon that but I have been fortunate to get a couple photos. Maybe what you should do is start smoking cigars so you can spend more time outside. |

I guess that I feel like I missed many years of this stuff. I was basically a work-aholic computer geek. Never saw the outside. Then I bought a camera, and started a serious appreciation of the outdoors. I live 15 minutes from Great Meadow NWR - one of the premier birding sites in the Northeast US - and drive by it on the way to work. But I never knew it existed until a couple months ago. For the last 3 years I drove within 100 yards of it's entrance... Now that I know it's there, well, I no longer want to work... Quote:
