Cream of the Crop

Woot! The last lens/FL I wanted. Not the last I'll buy of course as I might need to swap out certain things etc blah blah blah etc.
Initial impressions. Awesome. Well built, clean, smooth, quick to AF, great in AI servo, sharp. Not really as heavy as I thought it would be, easily handholdable outside. IS is worth about two good, solid stops for me, 3 if I really REALLY try. I could "get the shot" with 4 but it's pretty fuzzy at that point. IS is great. Good lord I think I'm in love with IS. Must...fight...that...urge. You know, being my first L, it makes me appreciate my Sigma EX's even more strangely enough. Sigma makes some top quality glass. The down side. Although I like the idea of increasing and decreasing the zoom tension, I dislike the fact that it's a two handed affair. It would be nice if the tension ring was totally seperate from the focus ring. Heh, that's pretty small. Anyhoo, another crappy day in Washington, overcast etc. etc. etc. so not much to shoot. All were handheld with IS on at shutter speeds I could not have maintaing without IS. If it's this good with IS on, I can only imagine it on a tripod with IS off. One happy camper. Thanks jojo All 100% crops. The first two at 400mm, the last at 100mm. Shot in Raw, converted, cropped and saved for web via CS2. Not sharpened ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Oh yeah...Two more things.
A. It's worth the cost. My Sigma 70-200 2.8 2X was very good. This is excellent. You truly can't beat the native 400mm. B. You believe all this crap fits in my Canon backpack? LOL |

Buy a Giottos Small Rocket to go with the dust pump
Not saying your copy will have problems...I think it varies, mine has a BIG dust issue, moment I put it on it blew a big chunk onto my sensor, but its performance is so awesome that I am keeping it anyway. It's just that good. Congrats on the glass and let's see some DUCK! |

Congratulations on a great lens (sharp too). You'll get used to one handed pump action, it'll free up with use and turn out to be pretty smooth.

I don't mind the pump. I've had fd lenses in "pump" form. What I don't like is the location of the tension ring and how easy it is to change the tension if you're adjusting focus or how easy it is to adjust focus if you're changing tension. I wish there was a way to lock it at a particular tension.
The weather here is so terrible today, rainy rainy rainy. I'm hoping to bring my gear tomorrow and do some shooting at a local lake. I'd like to get some 100-400 +1.4 vs 70-200 + 1.4 shots! |

Congrats - sweet lens! The crops look very sharp - what aperture and which RAW processing software are you using?

Everything was wide open, 4.5 on the 100mm shot, 5.6 on the 400mm shot. All were processed in CS2. Opened, cropped, turned off all the "auto" stuff, converted to JPG, save for web, done.
