ProNIC Solutions (http://pronicsolutions.com) has been an excellent EE host for me. And not just for EE... so far I haven't run into any server modules they don't support. They also have the Fantastico open source installer interface with loads of tools. Pricing is better than we were paying with our previous host, and they are very liberal in numbers of databases, email addresses, subdomains, etc. You can get shell access pretty much for the asking. The support has been exemplary, and they are always glad to juump in and help with MX, backup or other perplexing issues.

Lunarpages rock! I was having problems with startlogic as the db was getting corrupted and they would not increase max_questions and db became corrupted.
lunarpages has no limit on max_questions or a limit on db's. they support imgemagick and gd and will answer all questions very quickly, all for $8 a month! no setup fee and they will credit some cost from your other hosting fees. |

Lunarpages are great until your websites starts getting a lot of traffic and starts using a little more resources, then the dump your site and say, "sorry you will have to upgrade to the $50 a month plan if you want to continue to host with us"
Even though I was well within thier monthly limits. |

That seems like a pretty outrageous statement for Lunarpages to make. Can you support your statement with some more facts? Do you have the exact text of what was said? Their terms are clearly stated. If they've "dumped" your site, it must be for a reason other than they want you to pay higher fees. If you're within their bandwidth (and other) limits, you have pretty strong grounds to contest such action.
I don't mean to blindly support Lunarpages, where I'm a customer, too, but contracts are contracts. On the other hand, if what you've claimed is true, people should take note. Regardless, your claims need some more backing. Matt Quote:

This is extracted from the email they sent me.
Your account is utilizing excessive resources, causing a significant degradation of services on the server. This is a shared environment and we can not allow one user to utilize the majority of the resources on a server as it affects all users adversely. Because of this, you have been temporarily moved to the Quantz server. A detail of the problem is shown below: Excessive MySQL processes We moved you to Quantz first to solve the issue of the degraded service on valina and second as a courtesy in order to prevent any downtime on your site to allow you time to rectify the situation. Currently, your site is not suitable for a shared hosting environment. Quantz is not a production server and is not guaranteed to run in the same manner as your old server nor will it support all functions you may have. This is a transitional server only and is not intended to be a permanent placement. Please make a decision on how you would like to proceed within seven (7) days. After seven (7) days, your account will be suspended if no other arrangements are made. You have the following options: You may upgrade your package to the Enterprise Plan. The Enterprise Plan is a larger package designed for current customers who have outgrown our published shared hosting packages. For more information on the features and pricing, |

If you look around you will find that a lot of hosting companies do this, all wil have a clause about excessive resources.

Your site "utilizing excessive resources, causing a significant degradation of services on the server" is not the same as "using a little more resources" (from your first post). The numbers, both in what LP offers and what you use/generate, are really what matter.
There are several more questions unanswered. As wkitty42 says, what is the formal definition of 'excessive'? There shouldn't be any ambiguity -- either you use more or less than that value. If you're using more resources, and LP's threshold isn't abnormally low, then maybe you do need a more serious package. There's nothing wrong with that. Presumably, if you're generating that much traffic, there's probably an income stream (either from site ads or photo sales) you could harness to pay for the upgrade. Growing your site/business is generally a good thing. But you have to spend money to make money. It may sound harsh, but dedicated servers, with all their horsepower, exist for a reason. Your site would likely run better, and the other users on the lower plan would appreciate having the burden taken off, generating better performance for them. Further questions are about EE's MYSQL architecture, and how its design creates system load. Is the process as efficient as it can be? How much can be done in EE's config to help keep the load down? Do your settings reflect this? I don't have these answers, but I pose them for discussion. And are other users experiencing the same degree of system load? How have they dealt with it, either by configuration or upgrading their hosting? Matt |

I am just telling you my experiences, these are the types of games hosting companies play, what is excessive, well anything they want it to be.
I was also told that one of my photos, file_name.jpg was using 50% of a CPU, how can a jpg use cpu, well according to the hosting company it can. |

1. Cost for setup of account (should be zero in my opinion)
2. Ease of setup / with instructions 3. Support: In my case there is phone support/forums of users (amazing)/ email/ live chat Um ok then, 1. nothing 2. Submit the app, get an e-mail back with login details - has CPanel for setting up databases and PhpMyAdmin if you want to manually fiddle with the SQL database (cant think why you would) 3. A ticket based system, also has a UK and DC (USA) based phone number for emergency support. www.bravhost.org I just finished setting up EE on my account there - took less than 10 minutes to setup the database upload the files and run the setup script. Now time for me to personalise and do the settings |

I used Powweb for a few years prior to them upgrading their mysql server. Up to the server upgrade every was awesome. I recently switched to www.ixwebhosting.com (legacy support) and it's been smooth sailing since. One thing to note about ixwebhosting, you can access your database with any remote mysql administrator making back-ups a snap.

I am using dream host, and I can't complain a bit. their customer service is quick, and very informative. They offer a bunch of easy one click installs.
right now i have the code monster plan. usually 40 bucks a month or so, but everynow and then they have a sale, and i have it for 19.95 a month. I started out at 60gb of storage, and 1.6tb of bandwith. My disk space grows by 480mb a week, and my bandwith grows by 16gb a week. I can host unlimited domains, its a pretty neat deal if you ask me. check it out. here are all their plans, http://www.dreamhost.com/shared/comparison.html |
