Default The Uninvited Dinner Guest

This Mallard Hen has no shame. She swims by, sees dinner on the table and helps herself.

Taken with my old D30 backup, 400L and 2x II TC. Quality could be better, and will be when the 30D gets back.

Whoa, that looks awfully cold out there. What is a mallard got to do to get a fish? How did the gull get the fish? The fish had to be dead, since the gull can not dive for it. Quite a mystery.

Thanks Karen and Dennis. The fish are shad, and probably dead or near to it. Altho, I have seen gulls dive for fish, these are floating on or near the surface. So far, I've seen at least two breed of ducks, the gulls and the Bald Eagles eating these fish.

Cute! Those gulls are thieves, he probably stole the fish in the first place

Thanks Downy. No, I watched him get this fish. However, there was a crow stealing fish from the Mallards on the ice.

LOL Bob, it is funny. When I was shooting these, I was waiting for the gull to snap at her, but it was all very peaceful. The ducks did most of the fish catching today and they even shared with the crow that was there, although he made a big production of appearing to steal it.

Can't say as I've ever seen this kind of multi species social behaviour before. There was only one eagle there today and he skimmed right over the heads of some ducks, [maybe 5 to 6 feet] out in a very open space and took one of the fish floating in the water. Did the ducks freak out? No, they were watching him, but more like commenting on his approach, rather than being afraid of him. It never ceases to amaze me....
