Since you're in the UK, not very necessary since you're on the wrong side of the road anyway..

Kidding.. like BtK said, it can be very useful.. You could always rent a lens with IS and try it out first to make sure it's worth it to you.

A fast lens will always be better than IS for sports and freezing the action.

That's partially true. But remember, there are many a "fast lens" that has IS too, as in all the newer telephoto primes and larger zooms Canon makes.

Can someone explain the two different IS modes, or point me in the right direction to find out more about it? Motorsports is my main subject.

Thanks everyone.

mode one corrects for motion in all directions. the second one only corrects for motions up and down, and is therefore deisgned for tracking sideways and or panning.

This is very wrong....the IS will mitigate hand holding shake especially with long tele lenses. Often shooting with a long tele WIDE OPEN requires IS to mitigate hand holding...

I know IS is useful for telephoto lenses to reduce camera shake but I'm saying that a fast lens will be able to freeze action and a slower IS lens will not.

So IS does not help freeze action.

Its generally a good idea to use a monopod even if you have IS.

True, IS will not freeze subject motion...let the fast aperture & faster shutter speed conspire to do that....as for camera shake, well, IS is great, even for tripod/monopod use.
