Default Frozen Tugboat

We've finally reached cold enough temperatures for large bodies of water to freeze over. This tug sits in a lake portion of a river that runs through a small resort village in west Michigan. The village is called Saugatuck and just beyond the large dune hill is Lake Michigan. The white sphere on top of the dune is an old radar tower called Mount Baldhead, and is described as "An old radar tower from the early warning system during the cold war era." Good thing it was never used for its intended purpose.

In the summer time, this harbor is bustling with boats of all sizes and the town is filled with tourists from all over the world.

Ahh, yes...the cold. Lemme tell you about the cold! Yes, it was quite frigid at the time, with a strong wind blowing and probably pushing the windchill down to below zero. I was shivering my tail off as I stood there waiting for the sun to pop back out to give some decent lighting. I had my 100-400 on my monopod and it was still tough to keep it steady in the wind. BRRRR!!!

Thanks for the comments.

Thank goodness for IS JT. haha
On a sidenote, how are you liking the 100-400? Are you shooting alot of landscape stuff with it or are you shooting more different stuff?

Yes, I'm actually finding myself using it a lot for the type of landscape shots that I always found out of reach with my 17-40 (this shot is a great example of that. I've taken pictures of it with my 17-40, but it was just too far away). This lens is on my camera a LOT! I absolutely love it. At first, I wasn't sure how I'd like the sliding zoom, but I think it's VERY convenient.

JT, I love this photograph. The composition is perfectly balanced, with the tug and the radar tower on top of the hill. Beautifully understated colours add to the painting effect that saravrose alluded to. This I could happily hang on my wall. Thank you for posting it!

The green with the red strip hull and the snow really makes for excellent contrast, and the exposure is spot on as well, very nice shot Jim.

Jim, that looks darn cold, nice one. The onl change I might make is a 1 stop NDG to darken that sky a little, but you did a fine job of exposing the white stuff!

Great shot. I try to stay away from MI in the winter if possible. Great place to visit when it's warmer.
