You'll find the Manfrotto 488RC2 is very popular around here. Good price, good capacity and holds most gear (short of the super-telephotos) very well. It's what I use on my big tripod.

I can vouch for the 488RC2. Like Jon has said, it is very versatile and can hold the weight. And it is very popular here, Skip along with Jon suggested it to me.****whispers to the op "they may be the same person****

Not so - we manage to come up on opposite sides of the filter argument every time. And he used <whisper>Nikon</whisper> film gear; I've been a steadfast Canon user. :{)#

The RC2 and RC4 release plates are different sizes and shapes; the RC2 is well-suited to an EOS SLR or DSLR; the RC4 to a medium-format camera.

The 488 has a 3/8-16 threaded socket in the bottom. Most tripods either have a 3/8-16 or a 1/4-20 threaded screw to mount your camera/gear on. If your tripod doesn't have the 3/8-16, there are adapter bushings to bring 1/4-20 screws up to 3/8-16. I suppose someone somewhere might make a small-medium format camera tripod that doesn't use one or the other of these, but I can't imagine why, le alone how long they'd stay in business.

Same here ... don't see the point buying anything else as this is totally fit for purpose and holds value very should should you ever upgrade to something way more expensive.
